And David - Panama's third largest city - is both an escape from the outpost town of Bocas and the family's salvation during an emergency. But it is the people they meet during their stay in Panama that enrich their lives.

Removed from his friends, girlfriend, and island he calls home, their guitar-playing surfer son, struggling to grow up in a country whose language he barely speaks, becomes a favorite playmate of the Indians from the local village. He teaches them to play sports and card games; they teach him how to open a coconut with a machete, the importance of cultural differences, and tolerance.

Far from a cruising guide or a travel log, Eurisko Sails West: A Year in Panama is an experience - a family adventure that allows the reader to explore the beauty and challenges of sailing and living in rural Panama. When a medical emergency prevents them from leaving the country, decisions become more difficult and have shocking consequences. Neighbors who had become friends transform into rescuers, and in the end, we are all reminded of the importance of appreciating life and those we share it with, wherever we may be.

Could not put it down...

Another great read by Connie McBride. After reading her first book "Simply Sailing," I had high hopes for "Eurisko Sails West." All expectations were met. The author immediately gains and maintains the reader's attention throughout the entire story with tales of adventure in Panama and the day to day realities of the cruising lifestyle. It's hard to believe this story is non-fiction! When the captain faces a serious injury, the crew is left caring for him and getting him the treatment he needs to survive. The author's gripping account of this ordeal is rife with emotion and puts the reader right there in the hospital room with them. I could not put the book down for want of finding out exactly what happened next even though I knew the final outcome. Excellent story that is also full of tons of helpful cruising advice. Can't wait for Connie's next one...

Well written tale of adventure and exploration

The book offers a detailed account of one family's one year visit to Panama while living on a small sailboat. Connie, the author, details experiences with different cultures, anchorages and customs. Included is short journey to Costa Rica to visit a son. The author points out distinct differences between the people of Panama and of Costa Rica.
Lastly, an insight is provided due to the necessary back surgery for the skipper. The whole ordeal leaves one realizing how great our medical care is in the U.S. in relation to that offered in third world countries.
A pleasant, easy read that is informative and interesting.

What a trip!

This is by far my favorite piece of literature by Connie McBride! It was written as if I got to sail along with her family on Eurisko, wondering to myself how I would have reacted in all the situations they encountered. I know I probably would have whined through some of it whereas they never did...but it's because this wasn't a vacation, it's their life! Connie uses all 5 senses to help the reader live through her eyes and a get a feel for everything in the surroundings. Anyone can go to Panama and be a tourist, but read this book if you want to know a different way to travel and really experience a great adventure!

Rene Caisse was thrust into a life-long medical-legal-political controversy that still persists since her death in 1978. Rene wrestled with the Hepburn government of Ontario over the operation of her Bracebridge cancer clinic during 1935 to 1941 and her use of Essiac. She refused to reveal her secret formula and legislation demanding the recipe forced the closing of her clinic. The government was embroiled in the dilemma of ensuring their public favour and appeasing cancer patients. About the Author

Donna M. Ivey was born in Toronto where she managed information research in business libraries, wrote the History of Consumers' Gas and contributed research to several international publications. She continued historical and biographical publishing in Bracebridge, Ontario, and has recently written papers on Sir John A. Macdonald and his times for the Kingston Historical Society.

Very Thorough Biography But...

This book relates details of Rene Caisse's to the extreme. My personal opinion was that it was a bit too thorough but some may appreciate that. One thing that is strangely amiss as any discussion of whether the 4-herb recipe or the 8-herb recipe is not only the original but whether or not one is better than the other. It does give the 4-herb recipe and it mentions Flor Essence which uses an 8-herb recipe. There is no discussion of whether one is better than the other.

READ AND RESEARCH THE FACTS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE

Very informative and credible read. Too bad her discovery and good deeds were smeared by the powers that be and orthodox medicine. People ought to read this book and then do their own research on the subject of Essiac Tea PLUS look into Laetrile (Vit B17) issue while they are at it. They BOTH fell prey to the medical-government cabal and it is all about DOLLARS, not arresting or curing cancer.

Kibbutz Life in the 1950s

Amos Oz's latest collection of 8 interconnected short stories transports us back to the kibbutz of the 1950s. These character sketches of quirky individuals under stressful conditions serve to enlighten the human condition, while giving us a window to what life in a kibbutz was like at that time. An experiment in socialist democracy, kibbutz-wide votes decided a variety of communal and personal issues, such as who gets to go to college and even what they can study. This environment can seen very foreign, but it is this view of the daily challenges to the kibbutzniks that makes these stories so fascinating.

The story, 'Between Friends' which lends its title to the collection is about the relationship between 2 of the founders of the kibbutz when the 17-year-old daughter of one, moves in with the other, who has the reputation as quite the Casanova. Oz's stories seem to be heading to an explosion, but in fact end more like a candle going out. In a heart-rending tale, 'Little Boy', a 5-year-old is cruelly tormented by the other students (children live dormatory style from birth). causing his mild mannered father to go postal. 'Father' is a story about a student who goes to a hospital to visit his dementia-inflicted father, yet we also see the Ashkenazi-Sephardi divide.

Amos Oz paints both hope and despair, which are present in equal quantities in the kibbutz. However, in a country full of grand heroics, he makes it clear that It is the small personal triumphs that are able to power us through life.

8 Linked poetic short stories

Between Friends is a beautiful, poetic picture of kibbutz life in that period of time when the idealism that marked the creation of the kibbutz movement is dying but not yet completely dead. In the first seven short stories (or prose poems) that make up this book we meet constricted, sad, lonely people self-condemned to live in a confining environment without much hope. It is as if the kibbutz has something of a prison about it. In the last story Amos Oz introduces a member who at general meetings "often reminded us of why the kibbutz movement was founded and what its original ideals had been." In this moving final story there is some resolution of the bleakness of those that preceded it.

Between Friends is a short book. It only has 179 small pages. It is easily read in a single session. Once read, however, it is not easily forgotten. Strongly recommended.

A dream of the kibbutz

Amos Oz writes 8 intertwined stories of the people on a fictional kibbutz set in the 1950's during the years these communal groups were settling into their existence. Much of the behavior is not necessarily limited to those on the kibbutz, but of people anywhere. Marriages fail and many are dissatisfied with much in their surroundings.

The people and their thoughts and feelings are described well, but more than that we can see the problems and workings of the kibbutz. We see the decisions that are made - whether babies belong to their parents or the community.
Life is hard. There are no real happy stories here, only the existence and will to go on.
This is an interesting study in human behavior and the beginnings if Israel and life on the kibitzes.

In the United Kingdom and throughout the world, the appearance of our cities is being transformed by public space privatisation. In other parts of Europe this topic is becoming a very contemporary and controversial issue as well. As one of the biggest cities in Germany, Hamburg shows processes of privatisation of public space. Its current HafenCity project reveals one of the biggest regeneration projects managed from and financed by private and public sources.

What do we mean by the privatisation process and what are its benefits and disadvantages toward the quality of urban living?

Privatisation describes the process of change within the management and ownership of open spaces. It is perceived as a part of Post-modernism and the post-modern city, where the “city provides the context for the social, economic and cultural changes brought about by the globalised new economy” (Minton, A. (2006) p. 5). Corporate governance in shopping malls, business parks, entertainment complexes and business improvement districts can be seen as part of this progression. The trend towards community or joint private ownership of assets such as community centres and parks is an element of the progressive privatisation of public spaces which reduces the pool of openly shared public spaces in towns and cities. Membership passes and fees can be used to regulate who uses the facility and how the spaces are utilised.

Traditionally we differentiate public spaces in terms of the rules of access, the source and nature of control over entry and rules of use. Therefore a place is public when anyone can enter it and no restrictions, other than Common Law and public safety to behaviour or use of the place is given. Public space is commonly understood as a state owned open space free of regulations, which this essay will discuss.

Access a New York City sub-culture

It's a soft, gentle look into a sub-culture in NYC and its surroundings that gets
overlooked in the material-world overload. Friendly-voice writing and detailed directions. Nice little essences of a visit to each place. Good tips. Makes me want to visit New York knowing I'll be able to find refuge if I want it. These people sound very familiar with how to nourish the spiritual needs in the Big Apple. I enjoyed reading it right through.

Maybe a little too good

This is one of those books worth much more than I paid for it. It's kind of like a Rosetta Stone for understanding and enjoying the City. It brings a lot of happiness in its pages, both for me as a long-time (former) New Yorker - and for my friends who are just visiting NYC for the first time.

Among the many unfamiliar & familiar places listed, I was happy to find The Frick included, a refuge I visited often when I went to Birch Wathen H.S., then on E 71st St. This usually missed treasure of the City is perhaps a little TOO AMAZING to be revealed to the public but the Authors are obviously giving away everything! In that spirit, let me recommend sitting by the interior fountain there, beside which one's troubles are revealed for the transient trivialities they usually are.

The book is filled with more places I have never heard of than those I know, demonstrating again that New York City and its environs offer an always-evolving adventure of new experiences. This guide is essential for those visiting New York who are serious about not being "just touristas." With it, one can experience the absolute best The Big Apple usually keeps hidden to all but the oldest, most savvy locals.

Where Spiritual Places in and Around NYC really blasts off is for NYC natives. I never knew about the majority of these wonderful gems. It made me fall in love with New York all over again. Oh, well. Between giving away so many secrets to visitors and drawing me back into the arms of NYC, maybe this book is a little too good.

Wonderful book

I really enjoyed this book. The book is ideal for someone like my wife whose been having a not-so-secret love affair for New York City, revealing special tucked away places. I'd be curious to know what readers think of the book and which places were their favorites. Thanks to the authors for sharing their insight and providing New Yorkers with such a valuable guide.

Perfect gift for those planning to visit NYC or if you know someone moving to the Big Apple.
