Ms Guiley, once again has done a masterful work for anyone who wants to know more about Wicca and the history of this endeavor.

Highly readable and accurate...not heavy or ponderous. It is meant to inform, not frighten.

If you have ever had even a passing curiosity in this topic, you can't go wrong with this one.

If I could have, I would have given it 6 stars. Like usual, we'll done.

All of Rosemary Ellen Guiley's books are highly informative and entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a curiousity about the Craft and the Wiccan religion. It goes into detail about the history of witchcraft throughout the ages. A must read for anyone who studies religion and the impact it has had on mankind.

Saturday Night Fever meets magic

I didn't read the first in the series, and I feel Pull down the Night stands on it's own. Bruno and his family have moved for his father's job, his father is a minister taking over a new Parish. We see him a few times, having heart to hearts with his son, not much of the mother at all. His older sister, Sophia, is overseas, His older brother, Sylvio, who is obsessed with his clothes, looks, and velvet dancing pants, and he will be starting the new school.

Bruno has a talent for maps, that turns out to be a Talent, as in supernatural. He is Kind, but there are also UnKind, and ambassadors, people who help the Kind. Bruno finds out he gets quests, with clues in the form of poems, and a time limit. Each time he successfully fulfills one his power grows.

At the school there are a group of students, who call themselves the Rosary, or what's left of it after three of the six have moved on to university. Sylvio, or Silver as he wants to be known, is instantly taken with the cool clothes and black cars, while Bruno is instantly taken with Celia, a Senior who is older and taller, and already has a boyfriend.

There is a ghost, depression, a wonderful supporting character named Marco who becomes Bruno's best fried. A lot of the action takes place at the school and at a dance club called Diaboliques. The entire book is music obsessed, from the haunting music Bruno hears coming from the bedroom of his crush to the dance music and so on.

The entire feel of the book is a rather leisurely pace and old time Gothic as opposed to in your face action. That doesn't make the book boring, just different. However, it's a good kind of different and worth a read. If nothing else you'll get your groove on and be looking up a lot of music on you tube, or at least I did.

An excellent addition to the series

I bought the first book in the series -- THE SUBURBAN STRANGE -- after hearing the author give a local reading last year, and ended up giving it a 5-star rating. The story has stuck in my head since then, and I've been looking forward to the next installment.

PULL DOWN THE NIGHT does not disappoint. It continues the struggle between the Kind and the Unkind, as played out on a high school campus. As with the first book in the series, the story is spaced over the course of an academic year, and has a supernatural mystery at its heart.

Things I liked best about it:

* It's a young adult novel, but the author doesn't pander. It's filled with clever dialog, smart ideas, and deep world-building details. The author shows a lot of respect for his audience.

* Excellent characters. As much as I liked Celia in Book 1 (and she appears here as a strong supporting character), Bruno is an excellent protagonist. His relationship with his brother, would-be-love interest Celia, and gay friend Marco is filled with so much honest emotion that it's hard not to relate to him. His steadiness is the perfect balance to the book's Gothic, otherworldly elements.

* Great writing. Like when a character is watching someone through an upstairs window, and "sees the shadow of another person slide across the ceiling." And when Bruno thinks about the "new secret he carries--a secret so huge that it seemed to be carrying him." I've read a lot of stories with great ideas and plots, but it's always a pleasure when the writing is so well-crafted.

*One of the things I remember most from the first novel is how the author opened my eyes to different types of alternative artwork and music. Music is still a huge part of the second novel (I've already downloaded the Tim Buckley song mentioned in the Author's Note), but in addition to that, Bruno's area of interest is architecture and geography. More than once, I was interested enough in a name that the author dropped, that I found myself surfing over to Wiki to learn more -- like about the architects Piranesi (father and son), and the bizarre things that came out of their heads. (Seriously -- Google "Piranesi prisons" and look at some of the drawings.) For that alone, this book is worth what I paid for it; I love walking away from a story that makes me even more interested in the world around me.

*I want to visit a place like Diaboliques.

*And possibly have the power to take magical short cuts through my closet.

Anyway. Definitely looking forward to Book 3. This novel is a solid and complete entry, and the world it's set in is certainly rich enough to fill several more books.

This is a good book. I don't think it's as strong as suburban strange, but I definitely enjoyed it and look forward to the 3rd book.
The first 1/3 is slow, but after that it really picked up and I got into it. But it was the same for me with suburban strange.
Overall I enjoyed it.

Melissa F. Olson was born and raised in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and studied film and literature at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After graduation, and a brief stint bouncing around the Hollywood studio system, Melissa moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where she eventually acquired a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, a husband, a mortgage, two kids, and two comically oversize dogs—not at all in that order. She is the author of Dead Spots.

Such an improvement over the first book.

The world-building in the Dead Spots felt generic except for the addition of a null crime scene cleaner. In the second book Trail of Dead (Scarlett Bernard), the uniqueness of the world - a labyrinth of a new mythology building on the boring cinderblock foundation of the first - has come to life. Suddenly the series is looking interesting.

(Note added to review: In the first book, the establishing scene defining her abilities and specialty magic involves the cleanup of a bird. The effect and non-effects of her null abilities as established there are important in the second case. Not that you need to read the first book to enjoy the second. Just the two situations together made some very good world-building.)

The main character was more engaging, as she begins to move beyond her damage and take control of her life. The murder mystery felt more urgent. In the first book, the urgency felt artificially enforced. In the second book, the ticking clock device felt real. Like the rush of an oncoming car.

True the Romantic Heroes both remain neutered - and I had hoped the policeman would wander off with his new love interest so we can stick with the more interesting combo of Scarlett and the regions' second-in-command werewolf (who needs to work on being an "Alpha" male hero). Hopefully in the next book the author will figure out how to make toes curl from the romance as well as the mystery.

Anyway, many of the issues that made the first book only so-so have been fixed. I can only hope to see a similar jump in the next book. Where the first book only felt worn-out, the second book now feels like a comfortable pair of worn-out jeans. I am hoping the third book will be like a comfortable pair of jeans that hugs every curve - in other words, the perfect Urban Fantasy book.

dumb heroes...

This is the second book of the series and right now, I'm having an internal debate on whether to read the next one. Why? Because the heroine had way too many TSTL moments.

*** some spoilers maybe ***

One thing about the character is that she knows her weakness. That is, she is just human. She may have the null power but at the end of the day, those powers are carried by a human with human frailties. She doesn't have vampire or werewolf strength or speed. And she doesn't have witch magic. But knowing that, she feels she has to protect everybody. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need to protect people you love. But when the people you love are a vampire, a werewolf, and a policeman, don't you think you should rethink that "I have to protect them" mantra? I mean these are not helpless people. This is not a minor like the one in the earlier book. Except for her brother who is clueless, all the other people she loves know what's going on. You would think that now that she faces a powerful witch and a vampire with a grudge, she would accept help. The cop offers her a gun and she refuses it for some stupid reason... And yet hours later, she forgets all about it. LOL. She goes into enemy territory without plan. Knowing that the bad guys must be doing something bad, she courageously offers herself without a backup plan! She didn't think about the fact that if she dies, more bad things could happen. Good thing she was the lead character, otherwise, she should be dead.

And for a 23 (or was it 24) year old woman, she acts so immature. She carries all these guilt about her parents and yet continues to wallow in it and use it as an excuse to hurt the people she loves. Geez, girl, grow up! She lives in a dangerous world, in fact is living and working in that world of her own volition, so embrace it. If you have so many concerns about the danger, get out! It's one thing if she didn't have a choice. But she does. So she chose this lifestyle and yet keeps whining about it. She makes decisions like ignoring her f--- buddy and yet can't look at him to stand by her decision. That's so juvenile. She reacts impulsively and gets saved by the hero always in the nick of time. It's just so exhausting after several repetitions.

Despite the slow buildup and exhausting, TSTL moments, the ending redeemed the story a little bit. Kind of a cliffhanger. That's why the debate on whether to read the next book. Still unsure. Anyway, this book is part of Kindle Unlimited. Thank you. Otherwise, i definitely wouldn't recommend this book at this price.

Scarlett Gets Better and Stronger

This installment of the series gave us a stronger and more confident Scarlett, the story was a great thriller and the love triangle is still as confusing.

Her old mentor is killing people and she seems to have a witch to help her, but the problem is that the killings seem to be getting closer to her friends and love ones. She is going to have to hook back up with Jesse to get this one solved and as usual Scarlett might not be the strongest person in the supernatural world but nobody gets to mess with her friends.

This story covers a lot of ground and after the first book this one seems to be a bit smoother and a bit better written. Our heroine borders on TSTL a few times but never crosses the line into idiot but it was close .

This story revolves around the love she feels for her friends and male love interests, plus in the course of the story you get more background on Scarlett. The past of her and Olivia will come to a head and Scarlett grows into her powers a bit more which I feel may have problems for the future.

Bottom Line: Great story, slightly better than Dead Spots but don't try to read this book without reading book 1 or you are going to lose a lot of back story and be confused. 5 Stars for mystery, great story and keeping the reader hooked without using cliff hangers.

Me ha encantado esta novela. Humor, cariño, y suspenso. Lo unico que hace que no reciba su quinta estrella es el final, desde cuando se revela el secreto de Victor. Alli es cuando la historia, en mi opinion, pierde un poco el realismo que ha tenido antes. Pero igual vale la pena leerla.

Great book. Easy and Effective ties.

This a great book for easy and very effective patterns in Pennsylvania and can be modified to local waters elsewhere. The book gives very clear examples of each tying step and presents close-up photographs of the naturals. I would definitely recommend this book to any avid or novice tyer/ fly fisherman.

Great book! Wonderful pictures

Great book! Wonderful pictures, fly patterns that are easy to follow and good descriptions of common eastern hatches. This was the exact book I was looking for to address hatches within the New Jersey and the Catskill Region of New York.

Sie werden von Zorghan, dem Befehlshaber des arkonidischen Stützpunkts Travnor, in ebendiesem Stützpunkt festgehalten.

Layman's Genetics

A great book, full of important information for breeders. One of the real strengths of the book is the section on genetics and inheritance. I've read a reasonable amount on gene theory but this book really clarified how things work. I also really like the section on litter evaluation. Ms Trotter's style is emminently readable, and certainly one can't argue with her experience in breeding for success!

Spending 2 weeks with this books is a lifetime experience

If you do nothing else for yourself in the coming year, make sure you get a copy of Pat Craige Trotter's "Born To Win." You can learn more from spending two weks with this book than some breeders will learn in two decades of trying to figure things out by trial and error. The range of information offered to readers of Pat's book is so great that a book review really doesn't do it justice. Once you have the book in your hands, the only other thing you will long for is the time it will take to read and absorb it.Enjoy!Editorial in the AKC Gazette, February 199
