This text has great explanations of the various tests used in statistical analysis. The questions are very informative and the explanations are concise and to the point - not long and drawn out like most statistical text books. I highly recommend for any statistical class, especially Public Health.

This book was rated as in 'very good' condition with the cover slightly worn. Not only is the cover wrinkled, but many pages in the book are shriveled as if damaged by water. I certainly am disappointed in the condition of this book; I would have ordered the one listed as 'good' or 'fair' because I am sure they were in better condition than this one!

Full of Errors

I have been expected to use this book for 3 semesters of biostatistics. Each semester I attempt to do the readings in the book, but I inevitably give up, more confused than when I started. It is all I can do to not throw it across the room. It is unbelievable to me that a book could be published with so many errors. And I'm not just talking about the endless grammatical issues. Many of the formulas are just wrong! Not a good match for someone who is working hard to understand statistics.

About the Author

George Sherwood retired from teaching high school history after thirty-three years with the Toronto District School Board, but continues to teach Canadian History at Woodsworth College at the University of Toronto, where he has been an instructor in the Academic Bridging Program for the past thirty years.

He and his wife live in Toronto, but enjoy their summers in Bala, Muskoka, where they have a cottage on the beautiful Moon River, where much time is spent with their family, including grandchildren. George is currently working on his next book focusing on Canadian history.

Disappointing and shallow

The book is very disappointing because the information it contains is very shallow. You could probably find much better information searching on Google than spending money and time reading the book. The book only gives you very basic information, for example on page 19, "... if you have a book and an audience that resonates with yellow, then you might want to have enough yellow on your site to "speak" to them without overwhelming them with a yellow..." Throughout the book, there are a lot of these obvious logic. The key point is that the book does not tell you, nor teach you, when or what "yellow" is enough for the audience. It tells you to use keywords when writing copy but it does not explain HOW and to choose them nor how to match the text with the best keywords.

Also, for a book that has only 190 pages of content, 20 pages are links to websites? Some of these linked sites are even stuck in time and has not been updated since 2005!!...

Of course the book might be helpful to someone who is totally ignorant about the web. However, if you know how to use Google (or even Amazon's book search engine) then I recommend that you find another book that contains substance because this book clearly does not.

Penny C. Sansevieri is a no nonsense thinker and writer. Beginning her career as an author ('Candlewood Lake', 'The Cliffhanger' etc) she faced the beast of competition in the publishing world, and instead of caving in, she took control, learned all the ins and outs of getting books published, and shared that hard won information and experience in such highly successful books as 'Get Published Today: An Insider's Guide to Publishing Success' and 'From Book to Bestseller: An Insider's Guide to Publicizing and Marketing Your Book!'. Now she has synthesized all of that information in this newest book that is the most complete guide to marketing books on the Internet available.

Sansevieri does not waste the reader's time with puffery or examples of her own successes. Instead she opts to jump right to the essentials, giving a nod to the importance of the Internet as a tool of communication and commerce. A Valuable Resource

For anyone looking to establish a web presence, this book is a great place to start. Geared especially for authors or publishers, the information is nevertheless highly relevant for any online entity seeking publicity. If you have something to say or to sell and you want to get your name out there (or at least your website), then getting this book is a no-brainer.
To avoid "overwhelm," I recommend that you read the whole book to get an overview and then start over and take it chapter by chapter. Ms. Sansevieri stuffs a lot onto these pages, and no matter how long you've been on line, you'll find some tips or hints you either didn't know about, or haven't utilized. My own website is going to see improvements thanks to this book, and I am going to follow my own advice and go back to chapter one to begin them. If you're thinking you've heard it all before and don't need the book, I would beg to suggest otherwise. Can you really risk not getting the latest scoop on what works and what doesn't? Do you really want to? If you've been on Penny's mailing list for a long time, you might have seen much of what the book contains; but here it is, in a nutshell. The best of her strategies and ideas, including lots of links and webpages to help. You can scrounge around the web trying to learn this, piecemeal, or you can get the book and jump into lightspeed. My copy is super marked already with things I need to do, and I look forward to having these steps in place. And, by the way, do you like armchair travel? Because Penny shows you how to do a virtual book tour and up the sales of your book as a result. Don't know about you, but I'm ready for the ride!

Lew Ayres (1908-1996) became known to the public when he portrayed the leading character in the epic war film All Quiet on the Western Front. The role made him a household name, introduced him to his closest friends, brought him to the attention of his first two wives, and would overshadow the rest of his career. To be a movie star was his first and only ambition as a child, but once he found success, he was never fully satisfied in his choice of profession. Although lacking a formal education, Ayres spent the rest of his life pursuing dozens of intellectual studies, interests, and hobbies. He even considered ended his acting career after just a few years to pursue a more "respectable and fulfilling" path as a director.

Ayres was given not one but two comeback opportunities in his acting career, in 1938 and 1945. He was cast in the film series Dr. Kildare where he showed his abilities in comedy and his unique strength at bringing a level of sincerity to even the most outlandish or idealist character. But he was willing to give up his star status in order to follow his moral compass, first as a conscientious objector and ultimately as a noncombat medic during World War II. To everyone's surprise, he was welcomed back to Hollywood with open arms and new opportunities despite his objector status.

Biographer Lesley L. Coffin presents the story of a man of quiet dignity, constantly searching for the right way to live his life and torn between the public world of Hollywood and secluded life of spiritual introspection.

Disappointing

I was disappointed in this book. Yes, we did learn more about Ayres than previously known. There were numerous quotes from Ayres , an appendix of letters sent to government officials during WWII when Ayres came out as a conscientious objector, a complete filmography, and extensive footnotes. However, I felt there could have been more interviews with those who knew and worked with him. I felt there could have been fewer errors - for example, on page 44 a photograph identified actor Henry Travers as Charles Butterworth and on page 70, actor Leslie Howard's name was spelled as Lesley Howard. It is these kinds of errors that make me distrust the rest of the book. However, the most disappointing was at the end of the book that mentioned Ayres death. There was no closure to the book to indicate where Ayers was buried, was there a memorial service and who attended and who did the eulogy, what happened to his wife, what happened to his son, and does he have any grandchildren. The only quote from his son was he remembered Ayres as a nice man who gave him cookies - certainly he has more memories than this. Many questions were left unanswered and to me, a good biography needs to provide closure.

Wonderful book

I watch Turner Classic Movies and enjoy seeing films of Lew Ayres including the Dr Kildare Series and also films such as Holiday and All Quiet on the Western Front. Author Lesley Coffin has written an excellent biography of actor Lew Ayres known not only for his film career but his conscientious objector status during World War II and his tireless heroic work as a medic during World War II. The author covers his early years as the child of divorced parents, his mother's remarriage, and his early interest in a career as a musician and his discovery as a film actor. His first major film appearance was opposite the legendary Great Garbo in the silent film The Kiss. His breakout performance was that of Paul in the film Classic All Quiet on the Western Front--the author describes how he got the part in this film and an inside look at the filming (there is an editing error where Louis Wolheim is referred to as John Wolheim). Ayres made films for such studios as Republic Pictures, Columbia, Warner Brothers and MGM. It should be noted that the film Holiday was produced by Columbia Pictures not MGM as the author states. Perhaps more fact checking and editing would have taken care of this. Ayres starred as Katharine Hepburn's wayward brother in Holiday (Hepburn did not begin her career at MGM until the Philadelphia Story in 1940). Holiday was another breakout role after which he worked for MGM. Ayres became very popular in the Dr. Kildare series opposite Laraine Day and Lionel Barrymore (who played Dr. Gillespie). Barrymore and Ayres became good friends and the chemistry they had in the film transferred over to real life. Ayres also worked in other feature films at MGM with co-stars that included Lana Turner and Greer Garson. At the outset of W W II, Ayres declared conscientious objector status which caused unpopularity for him but he did get support from many of his fellow actors. Ayres was quoted as saying: "To me, war was the greatest sin. I couldn't bring myself to kill other men." Utimately he worked for the war effort in the South Pacific as a medic, working tirelessly. Post-war Ayres worked in films and television and gained critical acclaim for his work as the kindly doctor in the film Johnny Belinda. Postwar, Ayres and Barrymore worked on a successful radio show of the Dr. Kildare series. Ayres appeared in such TV shows as Knot's Landing, the Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Hotel, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Little House on the Prairie.

In his private life, Ayres had two unsuccessful marriages, the first to Lola Lane, the second to Ginger Rogers. Rogers noted in her memoirs her great regret was the breakup of her marriage to Ayres. Ayres had a third successful marriage to Diana Hall in 1964 and that marriage produced his only child, Justin Bret. Ayres passed away in 1996 after a series of illnesses.

This book is recommended to anybody who is interested in classic film stars and wants to know more about the life of Lew Ayres. I would have liked to have learned more about Ayres third wife and child (there are no photographs of them in the book).

An Excellent Tribute to a Fine Actor

This well-researched book should generate a reappraisal of Lew Ayres (1908-1996), one of American films' most enduring and interesting figures on screen and off.

With unprecedented access to private papers, oral histories, and interviews with those who knew the actor, the author, Lesley Coffin creates a balanced portrait of a complex man, whose yearning to be at the center of the spotlight in movies in the studio era seems to contradict his inner search for peace throughout his life. From his surprising beginnings as a member of a traveling band to his experiences as an actor with varying successes and failures, and his memorable, principled decision to be a non-combatant in WWII, the arc of this deeply curious man's life is conveyed in this book.
