Stefan Zweig floh, nachdem das nationalsozialistische Regime in Österreich sein Haus durchsuchte und seine Bücher auf die Liste der Bücherverbrennung gesetzt wurden über London, New York und Argentinien nach Brasilien. Am 23. Februar 1942 nahm er sich in Brasilien das Leben. In seinem Abschiedsbrief hatte Zweig geschrieben, er werde "aus freiem Willen und mit klaren Sinnen" aus dem Leben scheiden. Die Zerstörung seiner "geistigen Heimat Europa" hatte ihn für sein Empfinden entwurzelt, seine Kräfte seien "durch die langen Jahre heimatlosen Wanderns erschöpft".

Good but needs an update.

I recently returned from a two-week trip to the Netherlands. While two weeks hardly makes me an expert I found much of the information helpful but woefully in need of an update. Don't use this book as your final source; rather, use the very extensive web sources to do your own homework on what is current.

If one's attraction to this book is based, understandably, upon the fact that it's about the only thing in print on this topic, then you'd be well-advised to look further; that is, of course, unless you're a practicing international family lawyer specializing in divorce. Marriage and divorce make up the main topics of this book. It has a good intro of eight pages for absolute beginners, but after that, it's mostly a bunch of cases filling up this small book that tries poorly to be comprehensive. Too bad, because there are some burning issues in this field, like abduction (barely touched upon), child labor (hardly discussed), marriage fraud (a terrorist tactic totally ignored), anchor babies and chain migration (the author seems unaware of these as well as the following), honor killings, acid burnings, dowry crime, human trafficking, and sex slavery. I understand the book is not supposed to be an issues book. It's a law book. But, I think one can go to the Hague site or a U.N. site and learn just as much.

"Als der bekannte Romanschriftsteller R. frühmorgens von dreitägigem erfrischendem Ausflug ins Gebirge wieder nach Wien zurückkehrte und am Bahnhof eine Zeitung kaufte, wurde er, kaum daß er das Datum überflog, erinnernd gewahr, daß heute sein Geburtstag sei. Der ein-undvierzigste, besann er sich rasch, und diese Feststellung tat ihm nicht wohl und nicht weh. Flüchtig überblätterte er die knisternden Seiten der Zeitung und fuhr mit einem Mietautomobil in seine Wohnung. Abwesenheit zwei Besuche sowie einige Telephonanrufe und überbrachte auf einem Tablett die angesammelte Post. Lässig sah er den Einlauf an, riß ein paar Kuverts auf, die ihn durch ihre Absender interessierten; einen Brief, der fremde Schriftzüge trug und zu umfangreich schien, schob er zunächst beiseite. Inzwischen war der Tee aufgetragen worden, bequem lehnte er sich in den Fauteuil, durchblätterte noch einmal die Zeitung und einige Drucksachen; dann zündete er sich eine Zigarre an und griff nun nach dem zurückgelegten Briefe.
Es waren etwa zwei Dutzend hastig beschriebene Seiten in fremder, unruhiger Frauenschrift, ein Manuskript eher als ein Brief. Unwillkürlich betastete er noch einmal das Kuvert, ob nicht darin ein Begleitschreiben vergessen geblieben wäre. Aber der Umschlag war leer und trug so wenig wie die Blätter selbst eine Absenderadresse oder eine Unterschrift. Seltsam, dachte er, und nahm das Schreiben wieder zur Hand. "Dir, der Du mich nie gekannt", stand oben als Anruf, als Überschrift. Verwundert hielt er inne: galt das ihm, galt das einem erträumten Menschen?

About the Author
Wayne Bernhardson first traveled to Chile in 1979 during the Pinochet dictatorship, wrote his master’s thesis on llama and alpaca herding in the Norte Grande’s Parque Nacional Lauca, and has returned repeatedly to broaden and deepen his knowledge and appreciation of the country. He has driven well over 100,000 kilometers through every Chilean region and Pacific island possession, and he has also visited Chile’s Antarctic bases in the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Wayne earned his PhD in geography at the University of California, Berkeley, but abandoned academia for a perpetual Latin American road trip that many university faculty envy. He is also the author of Moon Handbooks to Argentina, Buenos Aires, and Patagonia. In addition, Wayne has written for magazines and newspapers including Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, the American Geographical Society's Focus, Business Traveler, Dupont Registry Tampa Bay, Postcards, National Geographic Traveler, Latin Trade, and Travel Holiday. He often gives slide lectures on destinations he covers in his books.

When not in South America (he owns an apartment in Buenos Aires), Wayne resides in Oakland, California, with his wife María Laura Massolo, their daughter Clio Bernhardson-Massolo, and their Alaskan malamute, Malbec (named for Argentina’s signature red wine). One of three guidebooks we are using in Chile

My husband and I are driving for a month this January in Chile. We purchased three guidebooks while in the US to plan our trip and this Moon handbook was one of them. The other two: The Lonely Planet guide for Chile & Easter Island and the DK Eyewitness book on Chile & Easter Island.

We use the Moon Guide when we want greater detail about a town or an area. Sometimes the Moon Guide will have have towns listed that the other two books do not. The DK Eyewitness book is our main resource for planning. We also rely heavily on Trip Advisor for accommodations and restaurants.

We are armed with a large road map of Chile, a Copec (Mobil) book of details road maps, a GPS (it has missed some wineries by a wide mark) and the three guide books listed. We carry all three to make sure we include sights worth seeing.

Would love to love it, but ...

... there's some lazy writing here, coupled with not very good and far too few maps. The author spends a lot of time, eg, describing in detail certain walks/hikes. Without a map at hand though, these descriptions are all but impossible to follow. They only make sense when you are in the field AND have a map in hand. We spent much time in the Lakes region near Pucon over X-mas 2013. The Villarica NP is awesome, but the travel guide did not give us much info on that. A short signalling of the Conaf office in Pucon, eg, would have been enough. There you get knowledgeable folks, who hand you a map of the park with suggested routes, too. It was just one of these moments when you thought the guide could have been more carefully researched. Yes, you can't have it all, but there were many moments like that. Just a lil bit disappointing. Having said this, it is still much, much better than the Rough Guide, which I had a quick look at.

In 1962, Justice Arthur Goldberg and his clerk, Alan Dershowitz, launched a campaign to argue that the death penalty was a violation of the Eighth Amendment. They were ultimately joined by the ACLU and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, earning a victory in 1972 when the Supreme Court struck down Georgia’s death penalty law and toppling similar laws in the other 40 states with capital punishment. States responded with mandatory sentencing until 1976, when Robert Bork successfully argued for reinstatement and the court reversed itself. Evan J. Mandery is a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. A former capital defense attorney, he is the author of five previous books. He lives in Manhasset, New York.

An important book by a distinguished scholar

Meticulously researched and annotated, A Wild Justice is a compelling and thoroughly convincing account of the struggles surrounding capital punishment in America, both in society and within the Supreme Court itself. The book illuminates the specific issues involved in a number of fascinating cases, provides the historical context for the decisions, and explores how personalities and deal-making impact the decision-making of our highest court. It is this last point which is particularly revelatory.
Using a brilliant strategy of interviewing the clerks of the Justices, Mandery uncovers previously unknown details, including a true bombshell which will be of great interest to both general readers and scholars in the field.

This is a VIB (Very Important Book)!

The early reviews are spot-on: Evan Mandery's study of the Supreme Court's history with the death penalty in the 1960's and 1970's is engrossing, breathtakingly informative, and scholarly (but at the same time accessible to non-laywers). The insight he offers into the inner workings of the Court's deliberative process is first-rate and is based on interviews with several then Supreme Court Clerks who actually witnessed history (and helped write the opinions). Mandery has taken us into the Justices' chambers (and the lunchrooms they frequent) with the goal of delivering an objective account of the Court's stance on the death penalty in the United States---to say he succeeds is an understatement.

Great read. Extraordinary insight into the workings of the Supreme Court

A truly wonderful book that provides extraordinary details about death penalty cases in the late 60s and early 70s. It should be compulsory reading for young lawyers, if only so that they are exposed to the brilliance of Tony Amsterdam.
