Rather interesting, and sort of spooky.

I think this book started off a little slowly, but after that, the action just blew past me. I thought it was a very good book, and it was very original for the author to incorperate the vanished twin syndrome and Wing coming back.

Caroline Cooney Wrote THIS?

Perfume is the story of a plain, quiet girl named Dove who buys a bottle of "evil" perfume under an influence not quite her own; when she does so, her evil twin, Wing, is unleashed.
When it starts out, "The Perfume" can't decide if it's going to be a complex story about a girl with emotional problems, or a horror story about good and bad both fighting to win; the beginning is a bit of a drag.
Beging a die hard fan of Caroline Cooney's, I thought it would be a great addition to my collection and a good scary read, however I was kind of dissapointed in it because unlike with her other horror books (The Stranger, The Mummy etc ) the plot never sucks you in deep enough and seems kind of stupid in the end. Definatly not Cooney's best work.
Bottom line: if you love horror in any way, shape or form, or Caroline Cooney, then buy. Otherwise don't waste your money.

Rough start but ends okay.

THE PERFUME started off as a flowery mess of Dove getting existential about not wanting to go into a particular store in the mall because it was giving her bad juju or something. The book levels out somewhere around the halfway point when Dove kind of starts to lose her mind and then you start questioning whether she really is or not. That’s where it finally gets interesting. Unfortunately that’s pretty close to the end of the book.

For most of the book the actual perfume is kept in the background and the focus is on Dove’s vanished twin coming back to life inside of her. The smell of this Venom perfume triggers Wing, the scorned head twin, to emerge while calmer, soothing smells sends her back into Dove’s abyss brain. The concept is kind of strange and the way the perfume gets into Dove’s hands is just really contrived: a perfume that gets yanked after a matter of days sold in a store that disappears after Dove buys it (when she never wanted to go into that store anyway but she was COMPELLED to buy the stuff) and the insanity ensues. Really I wasn’t thrilled with the beginning.

Once the story settled into itself it got a little psychological and I like that in my horror. You start to question whether Wing is a separate entity or whether Dove really does have a split personality (kind of like Session 9, if you’ve ever seen that movie, came after this book was published, by maybe ten years). That part I really liked because as a reader it really throws me off and it makes me question everything that’s happening but not in an unreliable narrator sort of way. Here even the narrator didn’t know what was happening, what was real and what wasn’t for a time, so it added a level of anxiety to the story that amped up the stakes.

There were references to Egypt that I wasn’t sure were relevant. It was intoned that Wing was possibly some ancient being from Egyptian times and she got her power from the glass pyramid in the mall but whether she was that or really Dove’s vanished twin is never confirmed. The concept is neat but it just seemed kind of messy how it was applied within the story.

Overall it had its creepy moments but I felt it tried to get really artsy at the beginning there and it threw me off for the story. It was a bit overly dramatic without much explanation and it set the tone for the rest of the book and it didn’t really match. I did end up liking the story because of the weird psychological place it went to but the perfume itself was mostly a non-entity in its own story. I’ll chalk that one up to poor titling. Of course the perfume did have it’s use but for a book of the same title it didn’t live up. I still think THE PERFUME was better than a good amount of the old school YA horror books I’ve read because it did delve a little deeper into some mysticism and gave me better characters and a pretty decent story but it had a tendency of getting ahead of itself and it would jar me out of it. It’s okay, though.

About the Author

Prior to her writing career, Tena raised four children and worked in the local schools as a volunteer, substitute secretary, intervention specialist, and teacher s aide. Anxious to get started in my first year a principal! Going into the role straight from the classroom. I know there is a lot I will learn on the job but this book really helped give me ideas and focus on specific things to think about as I assume this amazing responsibility.

An engineer's "Catch 22."

I read this book 20 some years ago and it's stuck with me ever since. The hero/anti-hero's dilemma (to sign-off on a non-functioning product and keep his job or to refuse and lose the job) is something many working engineers experience every day. How this book kept from becoming a classic is beyond me. How it has gone out of print is way beyond me.

I gotta agree with the Catch-22 review

I read this book back in 1976, as a newly graduated engineer. It dealt with Viet Nam War era technology companies, but it translates faithfully to today's internet/silicon companies just as well. It is fundamentally a book about conscience, and is well worth reading. Some of the characters were just outstanding, and every bit as memorable as Joseph Heller's Catch-22 (think: Major Major, Milo Minderbender, or Orr).
If you can get a copy of it, read it and pass it to your friends. A definite treasure. You will remember it for years to come. I have.

More true to life than you might think

Read this book with delight and empathy when it first came out in print.

Besides the compelling storyline, well-laced hilarity and human pathos, the episodes and themes regarding the aerospace industrial complex are more true-to-life than you might suspect, unless you have actually been in the field. My rough guess is that 1/3 of all aerospace and defense procurement spending is wasted annually on unusable, gold-plated, over-specified, badly designed, non-compliant and otherwise non-functional equipment; it's a sad saga of knavery, folly and incompetence.

Required Reading for Network Marketing

This book explains the concept of building a network of consumers to build wealth. It clearly demonstrates why no selling is needed and is absolutely essential for anyone that is serious about building a large team. Please note that there are two editions of this book. One is riddled with typos and has been slammed in other reviews. The ISBN for the typo filled edition is 1587217899. The ISBN for the corrected edition is 1887938958. This is the one you want to buy. I agree with another reviewer that giving the wrong edition could undermine your credibility. That's why I've included both numbers so that there is no mistake when ordering. Make sure you are ordering 1887938958 and you'll have no problems.

Best Business Card

As a "seasoned" network marketer, I have never found a book that helps explain what we do today vs. decades ago when network marketing began AND that explains the power of exponential growth using leverage and duplication. It is clear after reading just the preface if you are cut out for this business, which saves a lot of time on the front end. Using the book then as a training manual for how to do what we do becomes a tool and capitalizes on the duplication process. The only question that one must ask themselves after reading the first two paragraphs of the Preface is...."can you do this?"...and to that I mean, can you hand the book to someone and ask them to read the first two paragraphs of the Preface....that person will tell you either "I'm interested, or I'm not interested"...and you can move on.
Network marketing is like driving a car. Why would you talk about the vehicle you have to drive if you don't know how to drive. We get to teach people how to drive FIRST...then show them the vehicle we use to make money together using Leverage/Duplication/Exponential Growth!

The Berenstain Bears attempt to answer The Big Question

In The Berenstain Bears and the Big Question, Mama and Papa Bear attempt to answer the "big question." When Sister Bear asks, "What's God?" Papa Bear launches into a long, boring lecture about the universe; Mama tries to answer the question by showing Sister that God made everything, like clouds and trees and worms. But, when Sister continues to ask, "What about earthquakes, floods, fires, and tornadoes?" Mama is at a loss on how to respond.

So, she takes her family to the chapel in the woods where they attend a Sunday morning service (although, according to the storyline, they are not accustomed to doing so). The minister, instead of delivering a sermon that particular morning, allows members of the congregation to speak. Farmer Ben says, "I feel thankful to God for giving us such a beautiful land in which to live." Grizzly Gran then says, "I feel thankful to God for two wonderful cubs." Mama Bear takes a turn by saying, ". . . I'm glad we came this morning. It helps me think things through."

The story ends after the service, on the walk home, when Sister Bear asks, "Did God make questions?" Papa answers by saying, "Yes, sister, mostly questions."

The illustrations in the book are bright, colorful, whimsical pictures of the Berenstain Bear family and friends. Most illustrations cover a single page, but there are a few double-page spreads, as well as two pages that contain several small cameo-like illustrations on each page.

What I Like: This is not the usual type of Berenstain Bear book. They tend to stick to subjects that deal with family and personal values, like being honest, taking turns, and saying you're sorry. So, I was glad to see them write a book with a Christian perspective.

What I Dislike: But, having said that, I must also say I was disappointed with the way they tackled the subject. No one in the book really answers the question, "What's God?" When Mama is at a loss to explain things to Sister, she takes her to church, but she doesn't even ask the minister for help. Then, at the end of the story, where Papa says God made mostly questions, the implication is, of course, that we have plenty of questions about things but no answers. There is no mention of any Biblical reference for answers to any of Sister's questions.

Overall Rating: Okay.

The Berenstain Bears Go to Quaker Meeting

I find it amusing that this book has gotten one star and five stars from people who identify as Christians. On one hand, the Berenstain bears go to "church," which Christian readers approve of, OTOH, there is no mention of Jesus or the Bible.

Sister asks the Big Question of Mama, which is "What is God?" Mama answers telling her that God is the creator of everything. Then Sister asks if God created bad things like stomach aches, hurricanes and germs that make people sick and Mama has no easy answer. Mama and Sister see the grandparent bears "going to Sunday meeting" in their Sunday meeting clothes. They join them. The preacher tells the assembled that today, the congregation is going to be the "preachers" and they should stand up when they have something that they want to say.

As a Quaker, I'm delighted to read this book to my kids since that's pretty much the experience of going to an unprogrammed Quaker meeting. The building that the bears go to has no cross visible, though it is obviously a church with stained glass windows. There are no obvious symbols of Christianity present. The bears get up and speak about their gratitude to God and their love for one another. The book isn't intended as a polemic to give a catechistic definition of God. It asks children to consider one of the deepest questions of all, what is God and if God created everything, why is there suffering? There is no doctrinaire answer, the book is a jumping off point for discussion between parent and child. Each person must answer the Big Question for him/herself and it would be absurd that this little paperback book of less than 20 pages is expected to give any reader definitive answers. That's the job of parents, not Jan and Stan Berenstain.

A Blessing

This Book is one of my favorites out of the Berestain Bear Collection. The book deals with the question how did we come to be, who created us ? The writers give their view by taking the family to church and show what they learn. This book is a rare collection and it gives me great pleasure to know that my kids can read a book like this. Coming from a strong Christain home I can say this book hits a spot on our family book case.
