But no writer—so far as I am aware—has attempted to depict the dismal condition of a felon during his term of transportation. I have endeavoured in "His Natural Life" to set forth the working and the results of an English system of transportation carefully considered and carried out under official supervision; and to illustrate in the manner best calculated, as I think, to attract general attention, the inexpediency of again allowing offenders against the law to be herded together in places remote from the wholesome influence of public opinion, and to be submitted to a discipline which must necessarily depend for its just administration upon the personal character and temper of their gaolers. Your critical faculty will doubtless find, in the construction and artistic working of this book, many faults. I do not think, however, that you will discover any exaggerations. Some of the events narrated are doubtless tragic and terrible; but I hold it needful to my purpose to record them, for they are events which have actually occurred, and which, if the blunders which produced them be repeated, must infallibly occur again. It is true that the British Government have ceased to deport the criminals of England, but the method of punishment, of which that deportation was a part, is still in existence. Port Blair is a Port Arthur filled with Indian-men instead of Englishmen; and, within the last year, France has established, at New Caledonia, a penal settlement which will, in the natural course of things, repeat in its annals the history of Macquarie Harbour and of Norfolk Island

Excellent Point Of care Resource on DIABETES for Primary Care

I just bought my hard copy last month and I have also heard Dr Jeff Unger in person on diabetes seminars. He is a primary care physician and being primary care physician myself this book is all I need to know improve diabetes care for my patients. This is not a Harisson or a detailed Thesis on Diabetes but practicle great point of care informations and diferent tools which can be used in an office settings to educate patient and office staff to improve diabetes care. With the fact that 90% of Diabetic population in US (out of approx 22 million people with diabetes)being taken care by Primary care physicians this is a must have tool I believe. The only thing better than the book is to hear Dr Jeff Uner in person. I would definately recommened this book to every Primary care MD or residents.

Diabetes Text book

Amazingly comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes. This book is up to date, evidence-based, case based and most importantly, written from the heart. Rarely do medical text books read like novels. This is the exception. Check out the chapter on managing mental illness in patients with diabetes. The complications chapter is the most comprehensive and current review I have encountered.

If knowledge is power, prepare to be superman

If you treat Diabetic patients you should get this book.

Written by a diabetic Family Physician who understands that to treat diabetes you need to "think like a pancreas." This book was written to provide primary care doctors the tools we need to care for these challenging patients. I got this book the first week it was out and I haven't regreted it.

With the explosion of Diabetes there are not enough consultant physicians (specialists) out there to care for all of these patients. Dr Unger provides the information we need to provide excellent care for our diabetic patients.

I cannot praise this book enough. The only thing better is hear Dr Unger lecture on Diabetic Care in person.

About the Author
David S. Ingalls (1899–1985) was the son of railroad magnate Albert S. Ingalls and Jane Taft, niece of President William Howard Taft. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he began his studies at Yale in 1916, only to leave to join the First Yale Unit, becoming a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve Flying Corps. After the War, he returned to Yale and then received an LLD from Harvard. During his long and illustrious career, he worked as a lawyer, a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Air) in 1929.

A graduate of Tufts University and the University of North Carolina, Geoffrey Rossano is an instructor of history at the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut. He is the author/editor of The Price of Honor: The World War One Letters of Naval Aviator Kenneth MacLeish; Stalking the U-Boat: U.S. Naval Aviation in Europe during World War I (winner of the 2010 Roosevelt Prize in Naval History); and Built to Serve: Connecticut’s National Guard Armories, 1865–1940, as well as numerous articles and papers in the fields of maritime, military, and aviation history.

You'll get a front row seat to WWI aviation

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Diaries aren't normally interesting to me, but this book offers such an unvarnished and close up view of Ingall's World War I service that it was very enjoyable and informative. You'll experience the bravado of a young man thrown into the high tech world of aerial dogfighting. You'll experience the boredom caused by England and France's brutal weather. You'll strife Germans and survive many a close call in in the air. You'll dine with royalty and you'll feel the sadness of losing a friend.

Do yourself a favor and follow along with the footnotes as you read. They're very informative in filling in background information.

A real hero for sure! I knew Mr. Ingalls on a professional basis when he was already into his eighties. When we would talk together, it was like having a fireside chat with both the man and the events of both great wars and also the inside stories of many of our political leaders. Despite the fact that he was a rugged individualist in his own right, he was also highly respectful of the people who were in disagreement with him or competing against him in business. To his dying days, he always valued his family and his country above any personal acclaim. The President of our country could learn more about how to act like someone worthy to hold the office if they were to see the selfless sacrifice that David Ingalls gave to serve his country in both WW I and II. The details of this book will help you to understand how people thought in an earlier time in our country when "SERVICE" meant something and reliance on the government was never intended to replace hard work and creative sacrifice. Yes, by all means, I wish for every American to read this book. Remember, this is a man who would never have had to work a day in his life and could have taken privilege and hedonism as his life's routine. Rather, he was willing to give all of his life for the advancement of what he felt was the greatest country the world has ever seen. I hope he did not do all of this in vain!

Exceeding expectations but with one disadvantage

The new release of CPR book is really amazing, long chapters have been re-edited and the material is very up to date. The papers are of good quality.

The only disadvantage is that lww wanted to retain the rights of photocopy, so some chapters are only available on the point website without being included in the book. This is a real disadvantage for students or readers who want to have the hard copy in hand!!!

Super happy with this purchase!

Excellent book to help prepare for FPGEE. I was very scared facing this exam because I just have to pass it, considering it costs more than a $1,000 to sit for it. I followed the exam blueprint published by NABP and matched them with the topics presented in this book, 85% of the materials mentioned in the blueprint is in this book. I was not aiming for a perfect score of 150 (highest score possible to pass FPGEE) but I needed to at least be familiar with most of the topics in the blueprint, so this book did that. I passed FPGEE with a score of 86.

The cons of this book is that there are some minor typos, mismatched answer to practice questions and it is 'old'. The first edition was published in 2010 and before the purchased I tried to find the latest edition (I was hopeful that there is a 2nd or 3rd edition since it was first published, which contains updated material) but there is none.

Overall, I am happy with this purchase and will use it again to face NAPLEX after I finish my 1,500 hours of internship as a foreign pharmacy graduate who wants to be licensed as a pharmacist here in the US.

I am a first year pharmacy student and I got this book to help me study for my exam and also to start getting used to NAPLEX style questions. So far it has met my expectations. I like the practice questions at the end.

Really enjoyed this spin-off from the Blue Bloods series

I'm so glad I waited to read this series of novellas until all four were out. I was able to read them back-to-back and the result was a near-full length novel. I thought this was a great addition to the series and a good spin-off in its own right. I loved reading about Bliss as she has always been one of my favorite Blue Bloods characters. I hope de la Cruz writes more from the wolves' perspective. Wolf Pact was the perfect read to get me back in the mood for reading the Blue Bloods series.

It Gets the Full Five Stars

Did the Blue Bloods series need a shot in the arm? Yes, it did. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the series. There was a lot of information in these books that we've been waiting on to make the world that Melissa De La Cruz created more complete. The world of the wolves, those who have not been turned into hell hounds and those who have, is explored in great detail.

I've always liked the character of Bliss, and felt a bit sad for her because of her many challenges. I'm glad to see that she got a bigger piece of the story, even if she did have plenty to learn and do. I also started to like Allegra Van Allen a tad bit more. There was a time when I was seriously questioning what she was thinking.

Wolf Pact The Complete Saga is definitely worth the read and was an excellent lead in to Gates of Paradise.

While this is the first Wild Cards story I've read, I highly doubt it will be my last, especially if Daniel Abraham keeps writing them . . . His prose is delightful and the stories he creates are always superb (sometimes they're disturbing, sometimes they're lovely, but they are always superb).

Short Stories Make Me Happy

I happened to read this on the TOR site. What a great short read! The story really had depth and there was enough action and emotion that took this reader there, and maybe I've never been to Manhattan and smelled the rain, but I certainly feel like I have. It's not overly long, and the premise is based on a mutation that isn't quite rare, but it doesn't affect everyone, and the mutation gives the individual some random super-power. The issue of privacy underlines the storyline, but it's a familiar thing for people these days in which our own privacy is often at risk.

Grade 7-10-- Patrick, 17, finds it ironic that he needs to request hall passes to go to the library, while as an emergency medical technician he can deliver babies and save lives without such childish restrictions. Wealthy Heidi longs to feel competent at something and close to someone. Daniel, 15, must escort his younger brother to a wedding he desperately hopes won't take place. Spoiled Darienne can only focus on the small, insignificant negatives of life. All of these disparate personalities and more are thrown together by the cataclysmic crash of a 747 on Heidi's rural estate. Don't expect the unity or finely brushed characterization of Cooney's Don't Blame the Music (Putnam, 1986). This time, her third-person narration and rapidly shifting viewpoints have awkward results, much like a shooting sequence for an action-packed TV movie. However, it is these very qualities that may engage the attention of unsophisticated or reluctant readers. The author has done her research on emergency rescue; the crash scene and its evolving confusion are vividly detailed, and a great deal of information is conveyed. Human frailty and strengths are counterpoised. For every overdone character flaw (even the dogs don't like Darienne), there are rewarding bits and the importance of being loved and contributing to the welfare of others is reaffirmed. Sure to be popular.

Teenage Terror & Triumph

This is my favorite of Cooney's novels, and my students(grades 6th - 8th) love it as well. Cooney places her characters in the most traumatic situations(in this book, a plane crash) and then Mrs. Cooney reminds us, as the drama unfolds, that these are still young adults with the usual teen years' concerns. Kids love this book because it holds the suspense and contains some (decently depictedt); "blood & guts"; yet it keeps its listeners' attention more through the audience's identification with the book's characters. The only "challenge" with this book and young readers is the continuous switch in point of views. Cooney's style allows the reader to know the fears, thoughts, and also flaws of all these individuals brought together by this tragedy. Much like it would be in a crisis situation, all these points of views are going at once. I found that reading this book out loud was more effective with my overall class of diverse readers. I would love to hear from other teachers especially who have read this book with their students. P.S. - This book is so realistic that if I had experienced a plane crash...I don't think I could read it.

Because ot the title of the book, you can tell that it's about a plane crash. This book is non-stop action. It goes back and forth. One minute you're reading about a little girl named Teddie who is flying to her parents alone. The next minute you're reading about a twin named Carly who is flying home to her twin. And all of a sudden the plane is crashing. One of the main character is Heidi. She is the owner of the house where the plane crashes. She finds herself in a sitution in which were she either has to run home and call for help or go help some of the vitims. Does she make the right choice or does she make the wrong one? Read the book if you want to find out.
I really liked this book because it did not just focus on one character. It has a lot of different characters. This book made me think what I would do in this situation. It actually made me feel like I was right next to the characters when this happened. But the thing I really liked about this book was that it was based in minutes. Like at 12:00 you're next to a girl talking about a quater taped to her hand and at the same time in a different paragraph a girl is talking about her twin sister. You will love the suspence of this book.

one of the best books I've ever read

I've always been into planes and plane crashes, and when I saw Flight #116 is down, just by looking at it I knew it was a great book. When I started reading, I got more interested in the peoples stories then in the plane, how Patrick wants so much for something excitingto happen in his life, how Hiedi dosen't do very well in school and how her life is kinda blah, and Daniels parents have split up, and life dosen't really matter to him anymore, and how his brother, Tuck, isn't the same without thier parents being together, and how Teddie worries too much about things( she's only 5 ), and how the snotty Darienne is wrapped up with her own silly life, and can't(and won't)care about anything else, and Carly just wants to do something with her life. All of these things are reality, and the book taught me so much of how life can be crucial, and give gifts. In other words, it has its ups and downs. And when the plane crashed, it gave a wonderful view of how life has bravery and emmotions. Its sad but I think what Caroline B. Cooney is trying to tell people, and not only entertain them, but to tell them that this is reality. How a plane crash can do so much to a persons life, when there are people dying out there in that world, and all people can think about is themselves. I've got to hand it to her, she's a wonderful author.

"These pages were not written in desperation, nor were they written out of boredom, or even, I think, to prove a point, but rather to offset the sinking feeling we all had that some day, when the whole thing was over, there would be nothing remembered except the confusion and the politics.

I certainly did not see it all, and in truth I have dealt with only a small part, but I saw enough, more than enough. They all came through the hospitals of Japan, one of which I was assigned: the 9th Division fighting in the Delta-the Riverines-the 1st Air Cav, the 101st, the 4th and the 25th, the 1st and the 173rd, the chopper pilots and the RTO's, the forward observers, the cooks, the medics and the sergeants... the heroes and the ones under military arrest, the drug addicts and the killers. Sooner or later they all came to us at Zama.

The stories I have tried to tell here are all true. Those that happened in Japan I was part of; the rest are from the boys I met. I would have liked to disbelieve some of them, and at first I did, but I was there long enough to hear the same stories again and again, and then to see part of it myself."

Ronald J. Glasser, MD, is the bestselling and National Book Award–nominated author of 365 Days, an account of his experiences as an army doctor during the Vietnam War. Of War, Courage, and Truth

I have read scores of books about the Vietnam war and witnessed countless movies. I have found no one who can capture, with such poignant clarity, the horror of the war and the nobility of those who fought it quite like Dr. Ronald Glasser. Through a series of deeply affecting vignettes, Dr. Glasser reveals the experiences of men who struggle with the personal and private moral conflict that only those who have taken a life can understand. These men did not, as later accused, lose a war; rather, their loss was their own youth and innocence.
The book is a haunting tribute that evokes images that are raw and bleeding...and yet bestows a sense of peace and understanding. I reread this book every year. It is a book about courage...the courage of the warriors who populate its pages...and the courage of the man who wrote their stories at a time when a Nation was not prepared to know a truth their sons could not convey. Thank you, Dr. Glasser, wherever you are....

ONE OF THE BEST

As a student of SE Asia history I have over 300 books on the subject and 365 Days ranks in the top 5%. (Also a veteran of three tours in Vietnam & Cambodia). I first read Dr. Glassner's book over two decades ago and yet remember it as if it was yesterday.
For those who want to know what it was like to be in Vietnam, this is a must read book. The writing is very graphic and it is a book you will not soon forget.
My deepest gratitude to Dr. Glassner for his fine work. Not only for writing it but especially for publishing it at a time when it was not fashionable to be writing about Vietnam or Vietnam veterans. My sincerest thanks to Dr. Glassner.

Made me do what I do now...

I first read this book when I was in junior high school in the early 70s...if you read the publishing dates, it actually came out as that hell hole conflict was winding down...I still read it to reinforce lessons...I learned of sacrifice and of dedication, not to the country, but between comrades...At the same time I was reading this, the protests were still going on...and service people coming back to the "World" were being horribly treated by those that they had gone off to theoretically protect...it bothered me greatly that no one gave homage to those coming home...in my mind, a debt to those involved in a human tragedy was left unpaid...the war ended, I finished college and went to med school...when time for residency came, I chose the VA...and when I finished, I decided that I wanted to stay...Why? because I wanted to give back to all that served in the uniformed services, but especially those who went to 'Nam and never got a thank you...and importantly, I wanted to work to make the "system" better for those that served...the book really had an impact...read it for what it tells you about the human spirit and the inhumanity of governments...when I run into a vet from 'Nam that I don't know, I always try to remember to say "thank you for going and coming home" because I can't be sure that anyone else has told them that...we all should...will you?

The Beasts That Hide From Man-Darwinian Zoology Today!

Would you like a unique experience of the kind only 18th century explorers could imagine,seeking new,lost,and extinct animal species?
Then hop aboard the crypto-safari that will be the one of a kind reading experince that can only be found within the pages of Dr.Karl P.N.Shuker's books.
For the pioneering spirit of 18th century discovery where there were still many white areas on maps and hidden or undiscovered (i.e.undescribed by zoology)animal species is to be found within his latest tome The Beasts That Hide From Man.
As a qualified Ph.D.zoologist,Karl Shuker is himself a rare enigma found wihin a young discipline of zoology founded by Bernard Heuvelmans,himself a very capable zoologist in the late 1950's.
Unfortunately,cryptozoology has constantly come under attack from it's critics as any new discipline or science will.But cryptozoology has drawn constant fire because of some of it's practitioners association with occult,new age,and outlandish methodologies,field work,and sloppy conclusions!
This is certainly not the case with Dr.Shuker,with his solid foundation in zoology,mastery of several foreign languages,and experience of having written several excellent similar themed books,he is more than qualified to take the reader to the limits of human knowledge and back!
Check out the blood drinking death birds of Ethiopia if you dare!Have you ever heard of a jumping snake?It's case file is in this book!I could go on,but I think you get the picture.
And speaking of pictures,the cover has an illustration of a putative "death worm."The rest of the book is illustrated with a variety of beautiful illustrations including pre-20th/21st century engravings!
Finally,the book also contains a useful bibliography,an index of wildlife names,and the best of all,a supplement to Dr Bernard Heuvelman's 1986 "Annotated Checklist of Apparently Unknown Animals With Which Cryptozoology Is Concerned."
All in all,Karl Shuker's books tend to get progressively better.For those in want of high adventure of the real flesh and blood Indiana Jones kind,a genuine curiosity of some "lost world" animals which perhaps may still exist,or just want a good read,then surely The Beasts That Hide From Man will not disappoint!

Author Karl P.N. Shuker certainly is more liberal than I in assessing the legitimacy of strange animal sightings, myths, and legends. However, he is also much more conservative than others claiming Bigfoot exists behind every door!

Shuker, in his book The Beasts That Hide from Man: Seeking the World's Last Undiscovered Animals, tries to ferret out the truth when it comes to purported sightings or knowledge of mysterious beasts, such as the Mongolia Death Worm. From giant birds to sea serpents, he works to uncover connections between what IS known with what MAY be. For example, he reviewed what is known about giant birds, and discussed theories as to why a few very large eggs have been uncovered in Australia. Clearly he takes his investigations seriously.

It is very easy to be critical of this search for ..."the World's Last Undiscovered Animals." I have stuffed in my copy a review of a book discussing the "rediscovery" of cougars in Michigan and an article on cougars in Illinois (see pages 276-277 in The Beasts That Hide from Man), and articles about scientists discovering a new species of monkey in Africa, the highland mangabey, and a new rodent discovered in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (25 cm long... and found in a food market). There are animals waiting to be discovered!

I wish Karl P.N. Shuker was more critical in his approach to crytozoology. However, as I said above, he is more critical, and demanding of evidence, than most cryptozoologists. As far as this book, a number of the artist renditions were of poor quality, and the book would have been well served with Shuker partnering with an artist to develop new sketches. For these reasons, I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I look forward to using examples from this book to get budding naturalists to observe well, report accurately, and think critically. And if you've seen ANYTHING out of the ordinary, I suspect Karl P.N. Shuker would like to know.
