WILLIAM MARTIN, New York Times bestselling author of ten novels, is best known for his historical fiction, which has chronicled the lives of the great and the anonymous in American history while bringing to life legendary American locations, from Cape Cod to Annapolis. Martin's first novel, Back Bay, introduced Boston treasure hunter Peter Fallon, who continues to track artifacts across the landscape of our national imagination in more recent works like City of Dreams. William Martin succeeds once again to capture the spirit, angst and flavor of the times he is writing about

Another great read from Mr. Martin. Set between Ireland and Boston in the beginning of the 20th century, this book illuminates the struggle for freedom the Irish had been engaged in with the British for 700 years. Building up to the Bloody Sunday uprising with great detail and insight. Well worth the read.

Mr Martin spins a historical tale of intrigue concerning the Internal struggle between a conquered country and their desire to be free. In this case, he craftily describes the Irish immigration to America, their desire to be free, yet their passion and longing to free their homeland of British rule. Characters are developed with a skill as if one was present in time when the action was taking place. The flavor of both Boston and Ireland were present though out the book and the twists and turns of the story added to the overall enjoyment of the read. A must read for anyone interested in Irish/American history.

William Martin, you rock!!

I, too, have read all of William Martin's books, and recommend them highly to anyone who loves Boston and/or it's history. Several years ago I saw his email address on the flyer of one of his books and just thought I'll write him and tell him how much I have loved his books, never expecting he'd either receive the message or, of all things, receive an answer from him, but I did. I had not seen a new book by him recently (this was 2004/5), and I was really anxious to read a new book of his. He was just getting ready to go out on a tour for his latest book, The Lost Constitution, which I ran right out and purchased and read in about 3 days. Now, I see you have another coming out the end of this year, 2012, and I now have a Kindle to devour it with! I, too, am in the process of re-reading all your books because I first discovered them back in the early 90's, so nothing like reliving the past, and your books are a wonderful way of doing it! I recently retired to Boston to live with my daughter so everything has come full circle and I am in the best of both worlds. Thanks, Mr. Martin.

About the Author

Lázaro Lima is the E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair in the Liberal Arts and professor of Latin American and Iberian Studies and American Studies at the University of Richmond. Anthology of diverse voices in queer Latino writing.

In his introduction to this anthology, Lima points out the wide diversity of queer Latino writers, with their varying experiences and ideas, which make up the commonalities of the stories in this book. There are seventeen such stories in all, ranging in scope from edgy memoirs of urban childhood adventures, to enduring remembrances of friends and acquaintances one might have preferred to forget, and life lessons learned from a wide variety of shared experiences,

Unlike most anthologies, none of the stories especially stood out as noteworthy to me. The writing is generally very good, though sometimes difficult to navigate for someone who is not bilingual, since some of the authors use phrases and sometimes entire paragraphs in Spanish, beyond the scope of my limited high school language courses. There is no central theme of the writings, which is perhaps the point in illustrating how "queer Latino writing" is just as diverse as any writing, which makes the need for the book far from compelling for me, perhaps reflecting a cultural bias on my part. Discounting that, and my own language problems, I'll give it four stars out of five for the quality of the writing.

Good collection

This was a good collection of stories by a wide variety of writers. Of the pieces that stick out n my mind (don't have the book in front of me)...Horacio N. Roque Ramírez's bio essay is devestatingly beautiful and heartfelt. Charles Rice-González's tale of young tranny bandits is actually revealing and ultimately sad. Ramón García spins a comic tragedy of a Selena-obsessed drag queen. Achy Obejas has a quietly haunting piece in the beginning of the book. Raquel Gutiérrez has a sweet defiant piece about a butch girl.

I'd give NO stars if I could.

This is by far one of the worst, if not the very worst, textbook I have ever had the misfortune to spend money on.
On one page I counted 5 typos, 5 sentence fragments, and three sentences that made no sense, as in were circular in logic or just didn't make any grammatical sense.
The whole book is like that.

In addition, they fail to define significant terms and rely excessively on acronyms, which are also either undefined, or defined *once* in the body of a paragraph, two chapters back.

I have noticed that there are instances where the information is just plain wrong, which is unsurprising. If they can't even proofread, I don't expect accuracy.

But the one thing that infuriated me the most was the diarrhea of peripheral information crammed in in place of better explication of actual hematological processes. For example, the fact that a mutation that causes x change in y gene, occurs two thirds of the way down on the long leg of chromosome 14 takes up page space. It is too vague to be useful in a lab setting, and meaningless otherwise. Why include it?! The text is FULL of crap factoids like that. And not enough explanation of actual hematology.

If you want excellent alternatives, the Harmening or Rodak books are much better!

Just for full disclosure, I am a veterinarian, so I have read dozens of clinical texts to compare this with.

The best and only guide you'll need for starting an online consignment business

This is a great idea for a book, and I was glad to see it was written by a longtime, successful Powerseller with experience running his own eBay consignment business. This is a how-to book from a real entrepreneur, who is giving some real-world advice. He tells you exactly what works, what doesn't work, and why.

It's clear that eBay has some momentum with its "Trading Assistant" program. Since its launch last year, 80,000 sellers have signed up, and eBay drop-off sites are popping up everywhere. People with stuff to sell are becoming aware that this is a real alternative to yard sales and newspaper classifieds. Once you sign up with eBay to become a Trading Assistant, you're listed in their Web site directory, where potential customers can find you by Zip Code.

How big is the opportunity? The author estimates that just one company, AuctionDrop, is closing about $50,000 worth of auctions a week on eBay. With a commision rate of 40 percent, that comes to a gross margin of $20,000 a week. Ramping up to a scale this big would certainly require some employees, rent payments, and advertising. But once you've proven your business at a smaller scale, you can expand at your own pace. Any one-person eBayer relatively skilled at selling could generate $1,000 to $5,000 in weekly profits, the author says. That sounds pretty darned good.

So this book solves the main problem for someone starting a new online business -- finding enough merchandise to sell at prices low enough to bring a profit. With the consignment model, people bring the merchandise to you, and after you sell it, you pocket a commission less your expenses. If it doesn't sell, you return the item to its owner.

Of course this book will have limited appeal to casual hobby sellers who aren't interested in devoting much time to selling. Only those ambitious enough to try -- and disciplined enough to follow the advice in this book -- will be able to carry it off. But by the same token, there are real opportunities here for people willing to do the work. Think of the millions of people interested in getting cash for their old possessions, but aren't interested in learning how to sell to sell on eBay themselves. Many of these folks probably realize they could get a much higher price for their items by letting someone else sell it for them online, where a worldwide pool of buyers can bid up the price.

But there are pitfalls to a consignment business. To do it right, you need to set up a real bookkeeping system for consignments. You'll need good insurance coverage if you store merchandise that belongs to someone else, in the event of fire, flood, or some other disaster. There's also the problem of managing the expectations of the folks you're accepting merchandise from. Popular shows such as "Antiques Roadshow" have convinced too many people that treasures are lurking in their attic or basement. Lots of the stuff isn't valuable, it's just old.

Fortunately the author provides sound advice on this and many more issues that the average seller probably hasn't thought through yet. For example, how can you represent yourself as a bonded auctioneer? How do you protect yourself from illegal activity such as stolen goods? The author provides bulletproof answers to these issues, so the peace of mind you'll have from reading this book will be worth its cover price many, many times over.

Lots more ideas you've probably never thought of are here in this book. For example, an online consignment business could target the lucrative business of estate sales. Online sellers could probably do a better job of selling more of the items, and at higher prices. And they could do this at a lower commission rate than traditional estate-sale operators, who conduct weekend-long walk-in sales require staffing and expensive newspaper advertisements.

If you have Titanium Ebay from the same author, this book is just a cut and paste work with an extended chapter on consignment

About 85% of the book is in Titanium Ebay, and in the exact same words. Its just cut and paste. If this is your first Skip McGraph book, this is excellent way to start.

I love McGraph style, and incisive info on the Ebay business. He tells you insider secrets of PowerSellers, and their tactics. But the best are the cases he makes, examples of what to buy, how to sell it and profit. He opens up your mind that almost everything sells.

Pity the Transient Moose.

Jasper Fforde is a very silly man who writes very silly books. His novels take place in alternative realities in which characters from literature can be kidnapped, adorable cookies are also sadistic madmen, and your social rank depends deeply on how well you perceive the color cerulean. Despite the absurd premise that structures each book, Fford manages to create characters that are completely relatable, which is so completely ridiculous, I can't believe I just typed it. Nonetheless, it's true. If you read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and thought that it was perfectly reasonable to blame Thursdays, you know what I'm talking about here. If you just got that last reference and still haven't purchased a Jasper Fford novel, just stop what you're doing and buy one.

Now for those of you who are reading this review because you've read "The Last Dragonslayer" and are wondering if "The Song of the Quarkbeast" is just as good (you wouldn't be looking up a sequel if you hated the first book unless you want to torment yourself. If that is the case, go ahead and read Chapter 3 of "The Grapes of "Wrath" a few times. Maybe in one reading, the truck will swerve), the answer is, "yes... and no". Yes, the characters you met in "The Last Dragonslayer" are back and fleshed out a bit more. There are some new characters that you're also likely to love. Like his other books, however, once we have met the universe in which the novel takes place, it's a little less magical on the second outing. Just a smidge. That should in no way dissuade you from buying the book. If you loved the first book, you'll love the second book. I think that I may actually like Jennifer Strange a bit more than Thursday Next. I would definitely take a quarkbeast over the dodo.

The Kazam books are described as "Young Adult" novels, and I agree that they would be enjoyed by any young adult with a sense of humor and a solid imagination. Grown-ups with those same attributes will love them, too.

Humour overdone?

I was looking forward to this book. In general I find reading young adult novels to be a breath of fresh air and I was hoping that The Song of the Quarkbeast would live up to its press as a magical adventure with a bit of nerdy wordplay.

The Story
----------
Young Jennifer Strange, a foundling, is left in charge of Kazam, the more ethical of the two companies that perform magic.

Their newly renamed competitor iMagic is up to no good, manipulating King Snodd into ordering a contest between the wizards of both companies; the losers to merge with the winning agency.

Jennifer expects to win, that is until they begin losing sorcerers to Runix powered spells and trumped up magical misdemeanours.

The search for magical allies results in the revelation that nefarious plans are afoot.

My Issues

Initially I liked the word play, the short tangents away from the movement of the story, and the jokes or allusions that might escape younger readers.

I usually give a novel 25 % of its length, or about 100 pages to hook me in, some novels require an adjustment due to style. I found that by a third of the way through The Song of the Quarkbeast, I wasn't. The witty wordplay and divergent descriptions began to feel overdone and I longed for the story to pick up pace.

I also had issues with Jennifer. She seemed to me to be a bit wooden, perhaps standoffish - I didn't feel she was a convincing 16 year old girl.

Recommendations

My 15 year old self would have liked this book, it was reminiscent of Douglas Adams and the sense of humour that produced the Deeper Meaning of Liff, but even then I think I might also have had an issue with the pacing.

I am hesitant to recommend it to all but the hard-core book nerds amongst the teen population, those who will find endless amusement in descriptions of the history, characters, oddities of the Kingdom of Hereford and who have the ability to make the connection with their real world equivalents.

I struggled to enjoy this one.

Quirky but Fun

Jasper Fforde's work tends to either be loved or generally disliked depending on how serious one attempts to take any given story. He obviously loves words and combining them in strange and sometimes mysterious ways to make potentially magical or just plain ridiculousness come out on the page. The Song of the Quarkbeast follows much the same path as the first book in The Chronicles of Kazam, The Last Dragonslayer. Set sometime in the more or less near future after the first book, this second volume finds Jennifer Strange and her cohorts at Kazam undertaking a challenge to rebuild a bridge. Along the way the Transient Moose proves to be more helpful than anyone thought, there is more than one quarkbeast running about, Tiger Prawns is sometimes helpful and often confused when it comes to helping Jennifer, and a handful of wizards run amok in various, sometimes nefarious, ways.

The Song of the Quarkbeast is about on par with The Last Dragonslayer in both writing and entertainment terms. Each book is also surprisingly complete in and of itself and feel as if they are something related to each other but you do not need to have read the first to enjoy the second, but it certainly helps fill in some otherwise confusing bits. You'll laugh once or twice, most likely not cry, and then wonder what it was all really about. Good though just short of great, but certainly worth reading if you're a fan of the first book.
