(iii) DST Project: HR/UR/29/2007 on “Geology of Platinum-Nickel-Chromium mineralization: Resource evaluation and future potential”, at Presidency College, Kolkata (2008-2010).

at best a simple overview

This book features many grammatical errors, small and at times blurry images, and figures that look like they were made on MS Paint. Content-wise it is a basic overview of many topics on exploration with little depth. Even the case histories give at most a paragraph about the exploration and discovery of each. If you are a layperson and want to learn about mineral exploration this will give you a broad overview, but if you are a geologist or professional in the mining industry don't waste your time.

great book! easy to read and definitely prepared me to study abroad in costa rica. When there, i felt like i was better prepared for the situations that came up because i'd learned about them from this book. Such as, carry your own toilet paper and how to work the showers! it was great knowing so much about the culture before i lived there!

culture shock wins again

the culture shock series is not the end all and be all but if you want just a little bit more of the local flavor and 'why do they do that' i've found the series to be excellent. this, like many others in the series i've read has given me a new appreciation of local life/culture. In this book especially useful was learning that Tican's never want to say no nor admit they don't know the answer to a question and how to deal w/ this. Specific suggestions were offered of how best to ask (and NOT to ask) questions to get the USEFUL information out of the locals. if you are going just to be a tourist and to look at the wildlife/plants then skip it, if you wan to learn more, better appreciate your experience in costa rica I'd suggest this is a must read. And.. don't be afraid of San Jose. The guidebooks i'd read indicated this was a dirty, crime ridden city....what I found was a very interesting piece of Tican culture and I long to go back and spend some time there to learn more.

What is the Trinity?

R.C. Sproul has an uncanny ability to make complex truths come alive. He continues to share his gift with the church in book number 10 in the Crucial Questions Series.

What is the Trinity? Sproul covers "acres" of theological ground in 63 pages. His explanation for the Trinity is rooted in a discussion of monotheism: "The idea that there is one God was firmly established in the religion of Israel from the earliest pages of the Old Testament." While the doctrine of the Trinity it not explicitly taught in the Old Testament, the strong teaching of monotheism is a crucial starting point.

Sproul continues by demonstrating how Scripture reveals the Trinity in the New Testament. The Father is distinguished from the Son and the Son is distinguished from the Holy Spirit. Yet we learned that he member of the Trinity is God. And when the Bible affirms the deity of the Father, Son, and Spirit, the Trinitarian formulation becomes clear.

The author provides a helpful section that concerns the Christological controversies of the 4th, 5th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The heresies and the key proponents are articulated and roundly refuted.

The author, in what may be the most helpful chapter of the book vividly distinguishes between "essence" and "person." God is one in essence yet reveals himself in three persons, Father, Son, and Spirit: "The distinctions within the Godhead are, if you will, sub-distinctions within the essence of God. He is one essence, three subsistencies." Sproul demonstrates how the doctrine of the Trinity is not only biblical but never violates the laws of logic. This is where Dr. Sproul is at his best: explaining theological truth and bolstering biblical reality with good philosophical foundations.

This work is short but packs a powerful punch. What is the Trinity? is an introductory resource that Christians need to read.

An Enlightening Little Gem (and Bargain)

I downloaded this free Kindle mini-book, not expecting much from a short treatise on the Trinity from a mainstream Christian scholar. But as I quickly realized, Dr. R.C. Sproul, though not a Christian mystic (as I am), is an impressive thinker and a fine writer. At the same time I read this book, I also read a couple other highly rated texts on the Trinity – and there was no comparison; Sproul’s book was far better, and free!

Sproul begins by providing a history of human religion – how it evolved from animism to polytheism to henotheism, and then to monotheism. And beyond monotheism came Trinitarianism, which though monotheistic, provides a nuanced model/explanation of the single God in both a transcendent and immanent context.

Sproul makes it clear that the Trinity does not contradict a single God. He explains how the Three Persons are consubstantial (or coessential) and how the terms “Persons” came to be used to describe the Three “Dimensions” (my term) of the single Living Reality.

Because Sproul is steeped in Aristotelian logic (meaning that contradictions are anathema to him), he is a pleasure to read. He explains the differences between the terms “contradiction,” “paradox,” and “mystery,” and emphasizes that although “paradox “and “mystery” pertain to the Trinity, “contradiction” does not. In other words, the Three-in-One God (Father, Word/Logos, Holy Spirit) is described in the Bible and does not contradict monotheism.

Dr. Sproul provides a brief history of early Church controversies regarding heresy and orthodoxy, and the nature of the Divinity. He discusses The Council of Nicea and the very important Council of Chalcedon, which produced the Chalcedon Creed (AD 451), which elucidated the divine nature of Jesus Christ and, in effect, gives cridance to the concept of the Trinity.

Dr. Sproul concludes his text by describing the Trinity as “a valuable shibboleth.” I agree with his conclusion. In other words, what is alluded to in the Bible needed to be made explicit, and a Trinitarian doctrine does that.

As a mystic, my view of the Trinity differs significantly from Dr. Sproul’s, which reflects conventional Christian theology. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this little text as a fine primer on the history of, and rationale for, the doctrine of Trinitarianism.

Anyone with a reasonable acquaintance of the Scriptures and at least a mild understanding of and exposure to Biblical Theology, has wrestled with(at some level at least)trying to understand the doctrine of 'The Trinity'.No matter how much time and effort have been invested in one's attempt to understand what the Bible reveals about the Triune nature of the God of 'The Word',there remains some mystery. R.C.Sproul's book 'What Is The Trinity?' is not an exhaustive study of this teaching but an excellent introduction to this foundational Biblical doctrine.The importance of this doctrine is emphasized by Sproul right at the outset p.1"...the trinity has emerged as a touchstone of truth,a non-negotiable of Christian orthodoxy." I have been a follower of Christ for over thirty years and every Church that I've been associated with(to the best of my knowledge)would not consider anyone a Christian if they did not believe in the Trinity.

Orthodox Christianity has always been monotheistic.So,Mr.Sproul asks the question 'If God is one,How can He be three?'.It is at this point that Christians have sought to defend the concept that there is only one God but that one God exists in three persons.The heart of the issue(has always been for me)defining the terms as best we can.R.C.Sproul addresses this in chapter four 'One In Essence,Three In Person'.He looks at the Church's historical understanding of the words essence,existence and subsistence.He considers the thinking of some Greek philosophers to be important to better understand these terms.Then he attempts to explore the understanding of the word person which he views as synonymous with subsistence.He writes with insight and clarity p.50 "subsistence literally means to stand under ...this word gets at the idea that while God is one in essence,there are three subsistences,three persons,that stand under the essence." The most basic definitions I've either heard,read(or have synthesized through what I've been exposed to)are the following:nature-what something is(for example animals have an animal nature,plants a plant nature...)person-has to do with ego,self awareness(self consciousness).I'm not fully satisfied with those definitions but in this life 'we are looking through a glass dimly'.

As with anything I've read by Sproul,I always come away with a better understanding than I had before interacting with his thoughts.On a doctrine as difficult as 'The Trinity' I think Mr.Sproul is a must read.

Everything goes in cycles in Bacon's quietly impressive debut novel (following her short story collection, A Private State), in which three generations of down-to-earth young women weathered by adversity seek less steady but sufficiently tractable men for taming, childbearing, then marriage. For Margaret in Saskatchewan in 1933, her daughter, Hilda, in Toronto, and her daughter, Danielle, in Paris, the more things change, the more they stay the same. All these women are strong, reserved, sensual, practical and capable of one major move, after which they settle down, eternally faithful to their offspring and the mate from whom they are parted only by death. Each man has one or two salient characteristics (Davis is a secret lover of beauty, Armand deals in antiques and generosity, Osman in secrets and gambling), but each couple is similarly devoted, and apart from a mother-in-law or two, sufficient one to the other. No one has friends outside the family. These are quiet people who communicate largely without talking, so the dialogue is limited, apart from pointed stories about earlier generations. Bacon's rather detached third-person narrative, which moves from husband to wife, also keeps the reader at a distance. But her prose has a pleasing simplicity that makes the book a quick and pleasurable read, and she captures moments well, as when Danielle and Osman, getting serious, "sat there for a few more minutes, quietly measuring each other's capacity for danger." Cool as the novel can be, its conclusion, set in 1990s New York, where Osman moves with their children, Sophie and Sasha, after Danielle's death, glows with a hard-won warmth. (Apr.)

The family featured in Bacon's tale moves among Regina, Saskatchewan; Toronto; Paris; London; and New York City and takes place between 1933 and the present. The book opens with the first narrator, Margaret, a nurse, who meets her future husband, Davis, a Scottish immigrant, when she treats him for a bad case of the flu. They fall in love and raise three children: Hilda, Jem, and Stuart. The second narrator, Hilda, then moves on to Toronto, where she creates a new life and gives birth to Danielle, the third narrator. After school, Danielle moves to France and meets Osman Harris, a Turkish-English man. They marry and have two children, Sasha and Sophie, the final narrators of this tale. A neatly interwoven story of landscape, personal history, and survival, this multigenerational first novel contemplates how much we are made up of our past as well as out present. With well-drawn characters and a subtle palette for a plot, this is a very good book about loss and change. For public and academic libraries.

When she dies, her daughter, Hilda, moves to Toronto, gets a job at a travel agency, and then has a daughter, Danielle, out of wedlock. Danielle vacations in Paris, where she meets and marries a Turkish carpet salesman. When she dies, her daughter, Sophie, is sent to school in New York. Uncertain of herself but determined to pursue her dreams, each woman is shaped by the social conventions and prescribed gender roles of her time, and each must find a way to be happy despite the limitations placed upon her. Finding one's place on the map...

Images of maps, bits of geography float through this excellent story of four generations of women--Margaret, Hilda, Danielle, and Sophia. Margaret is a nurse in Saskatchewan when she meets her future husband Davis, a Scots immigrant searching for his fortune in the new world. Davis, felled by a fever, changes course and settles down as a farmer-husband-parent. Daughter Hilda chooses to move onto Toronto where she makes a different kind of life with an antiques dealer. Margaret's granddaughter Danielle leaves her mother Hilda and migrates to Paris where she meets Osman, a dealer in antique oriental rugs. After Danielle dies, Osman and their two children Sasha and Sophia move to New York to begin again.
On the surface, the stories of these women's lives do not contain obvious morals or seem to have a purpose other than their recounting. However, this is a tale not only of shifting landscape, but of the search for one's place in the geography of the heart. It puts me in mind of the short-story novels of Alice Munro--'Friend of My Youth' or 'Lives of Girls and Women.' The richness of the text is like a Bazaar. Colorful and original images abound--the grandmother who is bent like a cipher and feels like a raspy husk when she hugs you; the former library-cum crater, filled with mushrooms feeding on mouldering books and lined with Queen Anne's Lace; the little boxes filled with copper pennies turned green, stacked and hidden behind the old kitchen stove--and rugs, maps, and mellow old wooden antiques. deeper than it seems

Lost Geography is a story about the search for each character's place in the world. Each character is uprooted from the familiar and must find a place that 'fits' in a new and strange landscape in which they are in many ways an outsider. And as they find a place in which they 'fit', they find that each choice closes off channels of possibility, of adventure, and that in settling into their place, they must face up to the joy and pain of real (though sometimes mundane) life. These common threads of exploration, adaptation, choice, these tie four very different generations together. Margaret and Davis find on their wedding night that they really do fit. Hilda finds Armand, then devotes herself to her daughter. Danielle is both the light and the anchor for Osman's roving soul. And Death is, inevitably, part of life. In this story the separation of children from their parents severs them from familiar modes of understanding, from their history, and this forces them, with varying degrees of success, to forge new ways of understanding their place in the world.
I found the last scene quite moving. Osman's carpets, thick with dust from their previous owners, are a piece of history that he cannot let go of, just as he cannot let go of his memories of Danielle. Lost Geography is an easy read, but I believe the 'morals' may be deeper than it seems at first glance. Osman's story as he tells it to his children during Danielle's illness may be much like Bacon's intention for her novel. Sasha and Sophie are disappointed with the story because they did not expect such an abrupt ending. "What's the moral?" they ask. And avoiding cliche, Bacon also seems to answer casually, "I don't know," leaving the pondering to the reader.
Bacon has a talent for carving out unique characters in simple, spare terms. With love stories that resonate with deep romance, subtle shades of understanding, sharp observations about people's intentions, Lost Geography is a very moving account of four generations of 'migrants', in the literal and metaphorical sense of the word.

Beautifully written story!

Lost Geography is a beautifully written book. The discriptions of place, and the thoughts of each character are so poetic and unique it took my breath away. It is a generational story about the way we fall in love, how fate and place and those we meet shape us, how our plans may get changed but life can lead us to the unexpected, that even through pain there is joy. Charlotte Bacon weaves us a tapestry with her words and characters. You should read it.

A fabulous resource!

I wish this book existed when I first began practicing massage 10 years ago! Even as an experienced therapist, I have already found this book to be incredibly helpful in working with several regular clients with complex medical conditions; specifically MS, cardiovascular issues, and cancer. The information it provides is thorough and beautifully organized. The decision tree gives a practical, easy approach to navigate through signs and symptoms, medications, and contraindications. I feel like I am able to see these clients and conditions with fresh eyes and more knowledge. I'm thrilled to have this resource in my office for new clients to come!

Invaluable! Indispensable! Essential!

I can't say enough good things about this book. I am a massage therapy instructor in clinical, hospital and oncology settings. Tracy Walton's book has quickly become an essential piece of my toolbox for curriculum creation and for the simplification of previously complex concepts. My brain does not work the way Tracy's does, so I was skeptical that a "decision tree" approach would be of much use to me. That said, I know that Tracy has years of solid experience and training and her articles and curriculum materials have always been top-notch, so I bought a copy of Medical Conditions and Massage Therapy when it came out.
Even if you only ever read and use the first 30 pages, you will find that it was time and money well-spent. This book lays out accessible approaches to make the "it depends" nature of so many clinical situations so much more clear. It makes simple suggestions about questions to ask and about what to do with the information you gather in response to those questions. This book should be used in every pathology class in every massage school and should be a part of the personal library of every massage therapist; even those who don't "plan" to work with clients with medical conditions. Buy it. Buy it now.

Great tool

Using the Decision Tree Approach helps take some of the uncertainty out of the process. I can sit with my client and we go through the 'Tree' together, ensuring we are both on the same page for treatment. I'm using this method for clients with injuries as well as medical conditions, and because of that, I'm able to provide better care. Massage therapists treating clients with any number of conditions would benefit from using Ms Walton's book. It is a handy and most useful tool in my toolbox as a therapist.
