ACSM's Exercise Management for persons with chronic disease and disabilites

I ordered this book for one of my Doctorate of Physical Therapy classes. It is very informational and is organized very well. Each chapter focuses on one diagnosis and then goes into what their reaction to exercise and exercise testing. The exercise testing is not as helpful for me however each chapter usually has a case study with an exercise program. This book would be beneficial to a variety of health care providers. An added bonus...my professor wrote a chapter!

This book is great for those in the exercise physiology/health promotion field. It gives you a lot of great information on how exercise effects medical condition from revascularization to hiv. Plus the ACSM is the best source for this kind of information. Plus the seller was got this out to me with no delay. Great job.

Christopher C. Langdell (1826-1906) is one of the most influential figures in the history of American professional education. As dean of Harvard Law School from 1870 to 1895, he conceived, designed, and built the educational model that leading professional schools in virtually all fields subsequently emulated. In this first full-length biography of the educator and jurist, Bruce Kimball explores Langdell's controversial role in modern professional education and in jurisprudence.

Langdell founded his model on the idea of academic meritocracy. According to this principle, scholastic achievement should determine one's merit in professional life. Despite fierce opposition from students, faculty, alumni, and legal professionals, he designed and instituted a formal system of innovative policies based on meritocracy. This system's components included the admission requirement of a bachelor's degree, the sequenced curriculum and its extension to three years, the hurdle of annual examinations for continuation and graduation, the independent career track for professional faculty, the transformation of the professional library into a scholarly resource, the inductive pedagogy of teaching from cases, the organization of alumni to support the school, and a new, highly successful financial strategy.

Langdell's model was subsequently adopted by leading law schools, medical schools, business schools, and the schools of other professions. By the time of his retirement as dean at Harvard, Langdell's reforms had shaped the future model for professional education throughout the United States.

The Architect of Modern American Legal Education

Christopher Columbus Langdell (1826-2006) reshaped legal education in the United States during his period as professor and Dean at Harvard Law School between 1870 and 1895. This book is a solid case study of the innovations he initiated at HLS, but it has a broader significance: Langdell also set the stage for the professionalization of professional school education generally through his influential leadership at HLS. And not incidentally, this also is a very effective biography of Langdell as well; one much needed since I am not aware of any prior biography of Langdell exhibiting such depth and experience.

After covering Langell's youth, education and period of practice on Wall Street, the biography really hits its stride when Langdell joins the HLS. Langdell was very upset by the corruption of courts and lawyers he had witnessed in New York. He concluded that rigorous professional and scientific legal education was the only way to immunize practitioners from Tweed-ring type corruption. And this meant rigorous training. Among his innovations (that have become standard in law schools) was the case method of instruction, focusing on case books; rigorous exams based on factual problem-oriented questions; sequencing of courses from the basic to the more advanced; three-year curriculum; requiring a college degree for admission to law school; an honors program; and rigorous Socratic questioning of students. All this seems familiar today to those of use who went to law school; it wasn't when Langdell was Dean and he faced both internal and external critics who bitterly criticized his innovations.

The book is outstanding in covering both Langdell and HLS. The author, who teaches at Ohio State's respected School of Education Policy & Leadership, did a two year fellowship at HLS, and is currently co-authoring a two-volume bicentennial history of HLS. He has been workong on Langdell since 1995--so he knows the material extremely well. There is, however, one fly (perhaps a big one) in the ointment: the author several times rather overdoes criticism of Justice Holmes, who had criticized Langdell as early as the 1880's for what he saw as a legal approach based on scientific principles and excessive reliance on logic, rather than putting law into the social context that Holmes preferred. There has been quite a debate in the law reviews on whether Holmes misunderstood Langdell, or only understood him all too well. The book at times becames a spirited brief for Langdell, with speculative psychological theorizing as to why Holmes was critical of Langdell (which struck me as much pap). Wherever one comes out in this debate, and the author makes a strong case for Langdell, the author's discussion enhances our understanding of legal thought during the close of the 19th and the early 20th century. The book is supported by extensive notes (fortunately, at the base of the page) and a stupendous 61 page bibliography. At last, it seems, Langdell is getting his due in this fine biography.

Enjoyable but typical romance, bogged down by secrets, lies, misunderstandings, and villians.

The conflict that come between these protagonists, interfering with their ability to stay together, has been told in various ways in thousands of other romance novels.

What sets this story apart from the others is the sports backdrop, injecting much needed action, color and competitiveness to an otherwise basic, dime-a-dozen plot. Throw in exciting venues such as Rome, Paris, London, Australia and New York, viewed through beautifully detailed descriptions which Nora Roberts is famous for, and the story really comes alive off the pages! It's always a rare treasure to find one of her earliest novels.

Not Too Attracting

This is one of the few Nora Roberts books that didn't thrill me. It seemed as if she had too many different subplots, which deterred from the main story line. The characters were well developed, but didn't have the personalities with which the reader could identify.

This is the tale of two tennis stars and their on-again, off-again romance. Asher and Ty were opposites and years before it seemed as if they had everything either of them could want - they were champions, they were in love and engaged, and they were happy even with opposite personalities. At least, they were happy until Asher broke the engagement and immediately married another man. The story picks up several years later when Asher is divorced and trying to make a comeback in the tennis world. She's determined to be the #1 tennis player in the world once again and she seems to be on the right course. She's figured out everything except for the way she feels when she sees Ty again and the anger he has towards her throws off her self-confidence. Through a series of events around the tennis courts, the story finally comes out about why and how Asher could leave the only man she ever loved and why she's now back on the circuit.

This plot is the cookie-cutter romance story and it seemed as if Nora Roberts couldn't make up her mind as to which villain to place in the story so she throws several into the mix. The ex-husband who sweeps Asher away only to demand that she never play tennis again, who alienates her from her friends and family with lies. Then there's Ty's sister who loves to stir up trouble and has hidden her secrets for years because she's afraid of Ty's wrath if he found out the truth. And the baby... well that's where the story really falls apart and becomes mundane.

This is still a decent book for an afternoon of relaxing. It won't leave you with any lasting impressions but will be somewhat enjoyable while you're reading it.

Piraterie war und ist nichts Anderes als Raub auf dem Meer, verbunden mit Anderen zugefügten und erlittenen Grausamkeiten.
Woher kommt die Faszination, die die Totenkopfflagge heute noch ausübt? Kein St Paulifan würde morden oder Beutekrieg führen. Kein Kind, dass sich Fasching als Pirat verkleidet, ist sich der harten und grausamen Realität der Piraten bewusst.
Einige Seeräuberrealitäten wirken aber offenbar aus der Distanz anziehend. Da ist zum einen die anarchische Freiheit derjenigen, die sich jeder Autorität außer ihrer eigenen widersetzten, zum anderen das anarchische Element - das Meer. Die Totenkopfflagge schreckte die Mächtigen ihrer Zeit zudem tatsächlich. Piratenkapitäne wie Blackbeard oder Roberts waren eine reale Gegenmacht. Die Totenkopfflagge steht folglich für eine eigene Art zu leben und sich frei zu definieren, ein Zunftsymbol der Unangepassten. Sie war und ist ein Zeichen der Unabhängigkeit.
Die Totenkopfsymbolik auf schwarzem Grund steht für einen Inhalt, für eine Art zu leben. Jugendliche, die als St. Pauli-Fans heute die Piratenflagge schwenken, sehen sich als Teil einer Gegenkultur zur herrschenden Kultur. Die Flagge steht in diesem Kontext nach wie vor für Subversion und gegen Anpassung.

About the Author
In the course of a delightfully misspent youth, COLIN BENNETT was employed as both a musician and as a mercenary soldier. He was far better at the second than at the first. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he is the author of the novels Infantryman and The Entertainment Bomb, and paranormal nonfiction including Politics of the Imagination, a biography of Charles Fort; and An American Demonology, about the head of the 1950s UFO-hunting agency Project Blue Book.

LOOKING FOR ORTHON

"LOOKING FOR ORTHON" by Colin Bennett is an in-depth study on The Story of: George Adamski, the first Flying Saucer Contactee and How He changed The World"

Like most people, I have always looked at George Adamski as one of those individuals who was either an outright liar, or an individual who did not know the difference between reality and fantasy.

Apparently, I was wrong on one count, for he was definitely a man who knew the difference between reality and fantasy quite well. He was not an individual with "schizoid-tendencies". I can not confirm the fact that he was a pathological liar either.

Author, Colin Bennett gives the reader a great deal of information regarding Adamski, and his life. Although, Adamski had a long history of metaphysical interests which encompassed everything from Madam Blavatsky to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and lived in a kibbutz environment on Mount Palomar in the late 40's and early 50's, the fact remains...he was an interesting individual. The author describes him perfectly on page 28 when he states: "Adamski is one of those individuals quite common in history whose "facts" don't add up. Like Adolf Hitler, he was a kind of metaphysical Pied Piper, though fortunately on the reverse side of the coin."

Adamski's claimed first contact with aliens occurred on November 20, 1952 allegedly in the company of six (6) other witnesses. Even to this day, there is no information to refute their claims, or to debunk the photographs as pure fakes. Numerous UFO's were seen flying in the area on that day and time, and there is at least one, confirmed report from a fighter pilot who also saw an unidentified object in the basic area fitting the same description as noted by Adamski and his followers.

Did Adamski really meet with aliens on at least one occasion? Did Adamski really meet the blond haired alien latter called "Orthon?" Or...was Adamski and his followers used by the Government in some huge disinformation program?

Whatever Adamski was, he played an intricate role in modern ufology.

Colin Bennett is an extremely insightful and intelligent individual who pulls no punches. Bennett leaves the reader with a new perspective, and... Adamski with new respect and dignity despite his human shortcomings.

About the Author

Jerry R. Thomas, EdD, is professor and dean of the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Besides writing the previous editions of this book, Thomas has authored more than 200 publications, over 120 of which are refereed publications, with numerous contributions in research methods. Awarded the C.H. McCloy Lecturer in 1999, based on his career research production, Thomas has served as editor in chief for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and as a reviewer for most major research journals in kinesiology and numerous journals in psychology. He has also served as president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, American Kinesiology Association, AAHPERD Research Consortium, and of the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. He was named an AAHPERD Alliance Scholar in 1990 and NASPSPA Distinguished Scholar in 2003, based on lifetime achievement in research.

Jack K. Nelson, EdD, is professor emeritus in the department of kinesiology at Louisiana State University. Nelson conducted and published research and taught research methods for 35 years. He has advised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and more than 50 masters' theses. In addition, he has more than 80 publications and has served as editor of research publications. A fellow in the Research Consortium, he has been a member of AAHPERD, the American Educational Research Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He has also served as president of the Association for Research, Administration, Professional Councils and Societies (now AAALF) and as vice president of AAHPERD.

Stephen Silverman, EdD, has taught and written about research methods for over 25 years. He is a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and he has conducted research on teaching in physical education focusing on how children learn motor skill and develop attitudes. He has published more than 60 research articles in addition to many books and book chapters. Silverman is a fellow and past president of both the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Research Consortium, and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). A former coeditor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and editor in chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Silverman was an AERA Physical Education Scholar Lecturer, a Research Consortium Scholar Lecturer, and Weiss Lecturer for AAHPERD.

Kindle version issues

The kindle version is not the best. It does not have page numbers which is really a drag when your teacher tells you to look at page 207 or whatever. Other kindle books I have do have the page numbers and there needs to be a way to put page numbers in for text books. Even if it is an estimate. Also, the figures are terrible and blurry. One table we used a lot in class, couldn't even make out the numbers. Amazon can do better.

Having personally used the 5th edition in a recent class, I found several typos and offered a couple suggestions regarding an appendix of symbols and easier access to pertinent formulas which in the 5th edition were difficult to locate in the text. These were conveyed from my professor to the authors, and improvements in ease of use were made. Good luck, researchers!!
