About the Author
BELDON BUTTERFIELD, who was born and raised in Argentina but attended school in the United States, has represented the Financial Times and BusinessWeek in Mexico for more than twenty years. He has also published two novels in Mexico: The Crystal Bull (with Bruce Zimmerman) and The Line/La Línea. He lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

For Anybody Asking: "What Went Wrong with Mexico?"

In short, this book is a fascinating, informative, and well-researched source of so much information that it is difficult to do this book justice in the confines of a few-hundred-word Amazon review.
For anybody that has ever traveled, lived, studied, or will do business in Mexico, this book is the latest addition to my 'must read' list.
One of my quick tests for any non-fiction book is how enjoyable was it to read vs. how informative was it, and this book 'knocks it out of the ballpark' in both categories. It steers well clear of the mistake that most historical books commit that seem to be little more than a grocery list of major events, or of focusing too much on interesting but isolated and insignificant trivia. The author has accomplished the very difficult task of not only giving us 'the view from 20,000 feet', but also of showing the reader how all of these tiny puzzle pieces fit together and produced the Mexico we see today.
The author also steers well-clear of resorting to being an apologist for Mexico's past and current failures, and that was the part that I found the most interesting and informative as it gave me true cultural insight through the eyes of someone who had lived there for decades. To me, that was the most valuable part of this book.
For anyone that ever asked the question of Mexico "what went wrong", this book is an excellent starting point to understand the complex answer to that seemingly simple question. The author takes an unflinchingly critical look at Mexico's tragicomedy of errors that never seem to be corrected, but instead are compounded upon.

Mexico Behind the Mask

Beldon is an excellent storyteller and has a real command of Mexican history. This latest book of his is a wonderful read and opens up the whole interconnection of events starting with the arrival of the Spainards in the 1500's and through all the political, social and economic uprisings until present time. It is a story of a country which is rich in excitement and intrigue, a country where tradition and family values are strong but also where there is corruption and tragedy. I came away from this book feeling that I certainly learned a lot about the Mexican character and decided to gift 5 books to my family members for Christmas so they could understand why my wife and I enjoy living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Pragmatic

This is not a dry scholarly tome, but a quickly paced and lively journey of Butterfield's view of the events that have shaped the Mexican psych. An excellent book for anyone from the USA that wants to better understand Mexico/Mexicans.
