This landmark study shows how Brunner's attempts to cross-fertilize the American pulp tradition with British scientific romance complicated the distinctions between genre and mainstream fiction and between hard and soft science fiction and helped carve out space for emerging modes such as cyberpunk, slipstream, and biopunk.

A remarkable book.

Jad Smith does a fine career overview of John Brunner for the new Modern Masters of Science Fiction series. Brunner was his own worst enemy, antagonizing friends and publishers until they dropped him. Later in his career he needed those people, but they weren't in his camp. Smith masterfully balances the contradictions of Brunner's writing and life. Using a treasure trove of both standard sources and specialized fan publications in the University of California at Riverside's Bruce Pelz Fanzine Collection -- the bibliography of primary and secondary sources runs 26 pages -- Smith makes the case for Brunner as a first-rank writer. I was always a fan of Brunner's work, but many weren't. Rival author Michael Moorcock ritually burned Brunner's books at a sci-fi convention, in fact, if the rumor mill can be believed. This book portrays the downside of the insider's club the sci-fi world was and continues to be. As for the fiction, Smith does a concise survey of a disparate body of work. Brunner's fans can locate new things to read; scholars will see the sweep of Brunner's oeuvre. Yes, Brunner will be remembered for four powerful dystopias ("Stand on Zanzibar," "The Jagged Orbit," "The Sheep Look Up" and "The Shockwave Rider"), but dozens of his other books, stories, interviews and poems deserve to be read. Thanks to Smith, perhaps now they will be.

Yes it seems he (Jjohn Brunner led a very eventful life of living and writing as he saw things and his views of many different aspects of how he believed life to be. Thank you I lied the book very much.
