About the Author
David S. Ingalls (1899–1985) was the son of railroad magnate Albert S. Ingalls and Jane Taft, niece of President William Howard Taft. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he began his studies at Yale in 1916, only to leave to join the First Yale Unit, becoming a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve Flying Corps. After the War, he returned to Yale and then received an LLD from Harvard. During his long and illustrious career, he worked as a lawyer, a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Air) in 1929.
A graduate of Tufts University and the University of North Carolina, Geoffrey Rossano is an instructor of history at the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut. He is the author/editor of The Price of Honor: The World War One Letters of Naval Aviator Kenneth MacLeish; Stalking the U-Boat: U.S. Naval Aviation in Europe during World War I (winner of the 2010 Roosevelt Prize in Naval History); and Built to Serve: Connecticut’s National Guard Armories, 1865–1940, as well as numerous articles and papers in the fields of maritime, military, and aviation history.

You'll get a front row seat to WWI aviation

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Diaries aren't normally interesting to me, but this book offers such an unvarnished and close up view of Ingall's World War I service that it was very enjoyable and informative. You'll experience the bravado of a young man thrown into the high tech world of aerial dogfighting. You'll experience the boredom caused by England and France's brutal weather. You'll strife Germans and survive many a close call in in the air. You'll dine with royalty and you'll feel the sadness of losing a friend.
Do yourself a favor and follow along with the footnotes as you read. They're very informative in filling in background information.

An All American Hero! A rare chance to understand why!

A real hero for sure! I knew Mr. Ingalls on a professional basis when he was already into his eighties. When we would talk together, it was like having a fireside chat with both the man and the events of both great wars and also the inside stories of many of our political leaders. Despite the fact that he was a rugged individualist in his own right, he was also highly respectful of the people who were in disagreement with him or competing against him in business. To his dying days, he always valued his family and his country above any personal acclaim. If you want to see into the life of the type of leader who could make a difference in our country today, this is the book for you. This should be required reading for every member of Congress and the Senate before they sit down in the Capital Bldg. The President of our country could learn more about how to act like someone worthy to hold the office if they were to see the selfless sacrifice that David Ingalls gave to serve his country in both WW I and II. The details of this book will help you to understand how people thought in an earlier time in our country when "SERVICE" meant something and reliance on the government was never intended to replace hard work and creative sacrifice. Yes, by all means, I wish for every American to read this book. Remember, this is a man who would never have had to work a day in his life and could have taken privilege and hedonism as his life's routine. Rather, he was willing to give all of his life for the advancement of what he felt was the greatest country the world has ever seen. I hope he did not do all of this in vain!
