About the Author
Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research in Colorado. A leading researcher in education, he is a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include The Art and Science of Teaching and Effective Supervision. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators. Dr. Marzano received a bachelor's degree from Iona College in New York, a master's degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington.

David C. Yanoski, MA, is associate director of research and development for Marzano Research Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. He has worked in K 12 education as a classroom teacher, mentor coach, and teacher leader and has served on curriculum and assessment development teams. He has facilitated the development of proficiency scales with state departments of education, districts, and schools across the United States. He received his bachelor's degree from Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, and a master's degree in education from the University of Phoenix.

Jan K. Hoegh, is an associate vice president of Marzano Research Laboratory. She is a former classroom teacher, professional development specialist, assistant high school principal, and curriculum coordinator. Jan, who has twenty-eight years of experience in education, also served as assistant director of statewide assessment for the Nebraska Department of Education, where her primary focus was Nebraska State Accountability test development. She has served on numerous statewide and national standards and assessment committees and has presented at national conferences. An active member of several educational organizations, Jan was president of the Nebraska Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She is a member of the National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and Nebraska Council of School Administrators. Jan holds a bachelor of arts in elementary education and a master of arts in educational administration, both from the University of Nebraska Kearney. She also earned a specialization in assessment from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Julia A. Simms is director of publications for Marzano Research in Denver, Colorado. She has worked in K 12 education as a classroom teacher, gifted education specialist, teacher leader, and coach, and her books include Coaching Classroom Instruction, Using Common Core Standards to Enhance Classroom Instruction and Assessment, Vocabulary for the Common Core, Questioning Sequences in the Classroom, and A Handbook for High Reliability Schools. She has led school- and district-level professional development on a variety of topics, including literacy instruction and intervention, classroom and schoolwide differentiation, and instructional technology. She received her bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, and her master's degrees in educational administration and K 12 literacy from Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado, respectively.

Great if you're looking for proficiency scales

Not quite what I was expecting. The proficiency scales are great, however it is not easy to figure out how to use them.

Not what I expected, but good.

The best part of this text was the break down of the Common Core standards and the research provided by Marzano's research lab. The links to his research lab and the text are very helpful for planning.

Great Resource

I have not finshed reading this book as of yet,. but from what I've read so far I know this book will be one of those resources I refer to often when grading my students work.
