Denial

Derrek and Denise Shaw: They graduated from top colleges, have jobs that pay well, and live in a beautiful house. They are happily married with a teenage daughter. And they are addicted to drugs.
For two people who never wanted to lie, Derrek and Denise were lying all of the time - to themselves, to each other, to their daughter, to others. Deny, deny, deny - that's what people do when they don't want to admit and deal with the truth. I was doing my best not to dislike these characters because I was bothered by their choices, but after a while I did have to ask, "What is wrong with these people?" I mean, they had common sense and they had a daughter to consider. The stages of denial in substance abuse is very well-written.
My thoughts while reading: Don't take health for granted. Don't take family for granted. Hidden issues sure can cause a whole lot of pain. Don't wait until everything is out of control to ask God for help.

Not for me.....

The story idea drew me in but the writing is lacking. There is very little emotion in what should be a very emotional story. Plus it didn't seem as though the author really understand the drug culture and the lingo that seems to transcend cultures and socieconomic barriers....to put it quite frankly, the reader isn't allowed to have an emotional connection with the characters, thus leaving one with the feeling of "why am I reading this"?

This book is a must read!! An eye opener for folk who are not aware of the consequences of using cocaine!! I read the book in 2 days!! We r reading this for book club! Great discussion!!
