The perfect buyer's guide to used cars

Face it: cars are a depreciating asset. Unless you have a collector's model that you keep in your garage most of the year (the proverbial "trailer queen"), you buy a car as a means of conveyance.
If you've got more dollars than sense and are buying a car as a status symbol or because "this car is so me!", this book isn't for you.
You buy the Lemon-Aid guide if you want a car that will do what you need it to do while costing you the least amount of money over its service life, until such time as you sell or scrap it.
Here's a bit of personal advice for those who don't know how or where to start car shopping:
- start with a budget and don't go over it; you CAN find something in your price range, even if it takes a bit longer
- there are millions of cars out there and you are under NO pressure to buy - another one will come along
- decide what you NEED, not what you WANT and be specific: air-conditioning, automatic transmission, cruise control, fuel-efficient, seating for four; don't limit yourself by trivial things like colour (nobody sells pink cars) or fabric (it's all designed to be reasonably durable and cleanable)
- eliminate anything that doesn't fit your criteria, which will leave you with a handful of choices
- compare what you're left with to the ratings in the Lemon-Aid guide; eliminate anything that gets below average ratings (unless you want to spend an above-average sum keeping your car on the road - in which case, why did you buy the Lemon-Aid guide and why are you still reading this?)
Start with your local online & paper classifieds (Craigslist, Kijiji, newspaper) and make a note of every car that passes the above gates.
Keep the ads in a notebook and jot notes about each as you call the owners.
You hold all the cards as a buyer and with the Lemon-Aid guide, you have a huge leg up. Negotiate on weakness - if a car has, say, a spotty record with air-conditioning, offer $750 less on the grounds the A/C will need service and you won't be out of pocket.
"The best deals you make are the ones you're prepared to walk away from." Live by that and DO walk away if someone won't negotiate. If their price isn't reasonable, the car won't sell, you can call back in a month and give them the same offer. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Don't buy a car without this book

Lemon-Aid 2012- 2013 Used Cars and Trucks was the primary reason I bought the car I did. I am one of those people who loves to do research and I can explores my options endlessly until I really feel solid about my decision. I am searching all the time for the best possible option at the lowest price. This book ultimately pushed me to the end point and helped me buy a great car. This book gave me information about the cars I was considering that I couldn't find anywhere else. Just click on the "look inside" tab and you will see what I am talking about. This book can extract you from the world of endless anecdotal evidence about what car is best and give you real numbers, and data about safety, reliability, price and even nitty gritty details about why it matters not only who built your car but why they built it. Unless you are one of those people with endless luck if you have to buy a car read this book first!

Good info - but way too much bias and editorializing

Some very good info - IF your car is mentioned. SKips out on coverage of quite a few cars (e.g. no mention of ANY GM small cars).
Also much of the book borders on being a rant by the author against certain makes, which takes up a lot of the book. Interesting info on your rights as a consumer - again however with a heavy dose of anti-carmaker rant built in.
Pros:
Big plus is the coverage of TSBs, recalls and "secret" goodwill warranty items.
Good tips for each car and model, as well year-by-year model changes.
Cons:
Needs to be updated - Just bought this June 2013 not realizing info is current only to Feb 2011 - so prices overall have to be "aged" a couple years.
Be prepared for epic rants against Toyota, and VW amongst others, and hyperbole
