Beschreibung:

Beware of Impatience of the Heart
By R. Stiltzchen
In the light of Zweig's short stories and his Roman, "Rausch der Verwandlung", this novel disappoints. The inadept English translation of the title, "Beware of Pity", may be taken as a sarcastic comment on the novel's central theme. A young Lieutenant in a cavalry garrison headquartered in a village near Vienna is accepted into the wealthy family of a nearby landowner who appears to be a nobleman, Herr Kekesfalva. The narrator, Anton Hofmiller, is the Lieutenant who is invited to a lavish party given by the Kekesfalvas at their elegant country castle. At the party, Anton gets swept up by the intoxicating dancing and feasting at the party, and by the presence of a lovely young cousin of the Kekesfalvas, Ilona, who is a much admired figure about the town and is the cause of his wangling an invitation in the first place. The whole scene is typical of Zweig: the party is filled with euphoria, yet it ends on a very depressing note. These moods are done so vividly that a reader may indulge in an amateur psychiatric diagnosis of the author himself: aha, you were bipolar, and that's why you committed suicide in 1942.
As Anton, "Tony", finally prepares to leave the party, he suddenly recalls the presence of the 17 year old daughter of Kekesflava, to whom he was introduced briefly at the outset of the dinner party. He feels obliged to bid her farewell, so he seeks her out, finding her sitting in another room with Ilona and a circle of aunties. On an impulse, the dashing young lieutenant approaches Edith, the Kekesfalva daughter, and invites her to dance before his departure. At this, the girl breaks out into great, loud sobs that bring all the guests rushing to her aid. In the turmoil Anton glances at Edith's feet discovering her heavy braces. She is lame from a childhood illness (polio?). At this, Anton bolts out of the house, returning quickly to his garrison while cursing himself for his carelessness.
The next day Anton receives a long letter from Edith Kekesfalva apologizing for her behavior and inviting him to come visit her as soon as possible. Accepting this invitation Anton becomes a regular dinner guest at the castle.
This novel is a thriller (not in the genre) with a fast pace and many reversals of mood. It ends with the assassination of the Archduke that ushers in World War I. But the mood swings are so repetitive that the novel is exhausting to read, particularly at the speed that the pace invites. The style, though, is always elegant and convincing. The book would have been better if Zweig had left out about half of the bipolar incidents.

Stefan Zweig Ungeduld des Herzens
By Forrer Dieter
