Diese Handlungstheorie basiert auf Kommunikations- und Interaktionsprozessen in Form von Gesten und Sprache. Er gilt aufgrund dessen als Begründer und wichtigster Vertreter des „Symbolischen Interaktionismus“. Die meisten schriftlichen Zeugnisse, die Mead hinterlassen hat und die unter seinem Namen veröffentlicht wurden, beruhen auf Vorlesungsmitschriften seiner Studenten. Wie auch sein Hauptwerk „Mind, Self, and Society from the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist” von 1934, dessen Auszüge Fanzjörg Baumgart in seinem Studienbuch „Theorien der Sozialisation“ mit „Die Entstehung des Selbst“ betitelte.
