About the Author
Michael W. Acton is Founder and Senior Instructor of the Wu Shi Taiji Quan and Qi Gong Association UK. He has been training for over 30 years and is the sole representative of Dr Li Li-Qun, a fourth generation Wu Style Taiji Quan master and a leading Qi Gong master, who, now in his 80s, is one of China's leading exponents in both disciplines.

Comprehensive, Wise and Detailed

Eternal Spring is an outstanding book. It is one of those rare texts, at least in English, that is both broad and deep. While there are very few specific examples for a beginner to follow, this is not a how-to manual, nor is it a text for beginners. If you are looking for either of those, look elsewhere. Rather this volume is a discourse on the value of Chinese energy exercises (qigong) with some interesting points about tai chi thrown in. If you are already a practitioner of these august arts, there is much to consider and ruminate here, and even if you know some of the facts Michael Acton shares, you may not have considered the particular context or framework he offers. You should. He has clearly given the study of qigong many years of his life and much passionate consideration.
What impressed me most about Eternal Spring is that although the prose can be a tad verbose it is never boring and indeed tackles some of the most experience-based, visceral knowledge there is--the sort that frankly doesn't easily lend itself to words--in a way that actually yields a feeling on the page. This is the highest praise I can offer, for I know how difficult it is to do.
If I have any quibbles they are no more than quibbles. The author describes tai chi as tangential but related to qigong without making the important point that since qigong is all about longevity and health and since physical threats can certainly diminish both, there is a practical relationship between the two. On the subject of tai chi he also glaringly omits the guandao in his discussion of tai chi weapons. I say glaringly because wielding that weapon, also known as the Spring and Autumn broadsword or Chinese halberd, gave the 17th century originator of tai chi much of the "intelligence" for the open handed form. The guandao is an important piece of the art's foundation.
As a whole, though, this book is tremendously worthy because of the way the author ties the ancient wisdom to the modern world and makes it relevant, important and real. It is obviously written by a caring, experienced and knowledgeable teacher. Closing the volume leaves the reader satisfied and wishing to perhaps meet Mr. Acton someday. This is a marvelous piece of work and I highly recommend it.
