About the Author
Margaret Littman is both an old-timer and a relative newcomer to Nashville. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, she left Tennessee for points north over the course of her writing career. But after 17 years she could no longer resist the siren song of the Parthenon, bluegrass music, or fried pickles, so she returned to Nashville, where she writes about Music City, Southeast travel, food, pets, and more. An avid stand-up paddler, she loves being a day trip away from the Tennessee River to the south, Reelfoot Lake to the west, and Norris Dam to the east.

There’s nothing Margaret loves more than telling natives something they didn’t know about their home state. And with 75,000 miles on her station wagon already, she has lots of ideas for little-known places to listen to music, eat barbecue, paddle a lake, hike to a waterfall, or buy works by local artists.

Margaret’s work has appeared in national and regional magazines, including Wine Enthusiast, Entrepreneur, The Tennessean, and many others. She is the author of several guidebooks as well as the Nashville Essential Guide, an iPhone app.

Margaret has loved lots of places she’s lived, but the day she looked down and realized she was wearing cowboy boots in synagogue, she knew she had become a Nashvillian.

Pretty good for an "on the beaten track" guide
By Jon L Albee
Think quickly and Tennessee might not seem like an obvious tourist destination, right? Then slow down and consider this: More than 10 million people visit Memphis per year, alone.

There are so many tourist attractions in Tennessee that it's almost mind blowing. Let's think of just a few. Beale Street and Sun Records in Memphis. The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The Great Smoky Mountains. Bristol Motor Speedway. Jack Daniels Distillery. UT football. From music to food to sports to geography to history, there's something for everyone.

With so many touristy things to do, there's no reason for an "off the beaten track" guide. This one is built around Tennessee's major tourist sites, and for good reason. These are the places you will want to visit. Very much "on the beaten track" is the way you want to go in Tennessee, even if you consider yourself a hipster.

Like all Moon guides, this one is arranged into chapters by geographic area. Listings are good and up to date, but are very selective. The sites included in the catalog are an excellent sample of Tennessee's best, but are not entirely comprehensive. There is a nice blend of indoor and outdoor attractions. Since there's so much to cover, there is definitely an emphasis on breadth rather than depth. Many attractions and listings get a brief mention, but few get the headline treatment.

Fans of Moon guides know that these books are loaded with cultural and historical contexts to enhance the quality of your experience. There are many sidebars within the text which feature important cultural topics.

I rated this guide at 4 rather than 5 because I think the author hasn't included enough of the state's historic sights. Sure, the major ones, such as Shiloh Battlefield, are here, but the more subtle sites such as the incredible number of intact antebellum plantations in central Tennessee are essentially ignored. Not a big deal, unless this is your primary interest.

Excellent guide to Tennessee written from a personal, knowledgable perspective
By essbee
I am enjoying really enjoying this guidebook. My husband and I are taking a road trip throughout Tennessee in June and good regional travel guides have been difficult to come by. Margaret's guide has been refreshing, personal and holds my attention. Frommer's guide to cities in the area are incredibly dry and the listings are not very hip. The Rough Guide's USA guide, which has a chapter on Tennessee, is more hip but doesn't really go into much depth. This guide feels more authentic in terms of its focus on local recommendations, it goes beyond the obvious attractions, and is full of interesting sidebars on local figures and history.

Moon Tennessee - a great travel guide
By Lawrence G. Miller
I received a copy of this book because the author used one of my photographs from Chattanooga. It is a travel guide, so not really the kind of reading that one would do cover to cover. But, I found myself actually reading multiple sections. It is really well done and has plenty of useful information. But more than that, reading Moon Tennessee makes me want to go to places in the Volunteer State.
