Review
"This is a refreshing book, not about religion, but about a relationship
with the surprising God who invites us to come to Him and be uniquely
refreshed. Ellen Vaughn has captured essential truths in unusual ways; this
is a fun read that goes deep."

Eric Metaxas

"Ellen Vaughn is brilliant, insightful, funny, Christ-loving, and has a dog
named after C. S. Lewis. But to top it off, she is also a terrific writer. I've
enjoyed and benefited from Ellen's books for many years."

Randy Alcorn
Best-selling author and founder of Eternal Perspective Ministries

"Ellen Vaughn has been a true friend . . . . In her I've seen the
reality of faith in hard times and the joy of faith in a weary world. She cuts
to real truth and hope in her writing, and . . . she makes me laugh."

Greg Laurie
Award-winning author and senior pastor of
Harvest Christian Fellowship

"Ellen Vaughn is a gifted, persuasive, and sometimes blunt writer who
understands how both humor and story can winsomely disarm us and
reveal truths we may have sought to avoid. Her book is a refreshing invitation
to consider Christ's tender words to the weary and a balm for our
disquieted souls."

From the Author
Hello, Amazon friends!  Just a quick word here about Come, Sit, Stay.  I think I've written about 18 or 20 books over the years, a number of them in collaboration with my great friend and mentor, the late Chuck Colson, as well as hilarious and courageous characters like Mary Beth Chapman, Greg Laurie, Denise Jackson, Frank Pastore, and others.   I love collaborative writing and getting inside other people's stories . . . but I try to vary my writing diet with books of my own, because though I don't have a large platform like some of the friends I've just mentioned, I do have stories to tell.  Just like you.   Come, Sit, Stay started on a sunny day when I was walking the beach, consumed by a besetting problem.  It was a burden I had carried for some time, and as I walked the gorgeous beach, suffice it to say I did not feel gorgeous inside.  I felt like a dog worrying a long-gnawed bone. Jesus' words from Matthew 11:28 came to mind:  "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."   Yes, yes, I've heard that a million times.  Right. But as I actually chewed on the Word--instead of my worry--I began to discover a whole new dimension of rest that I had not known before. That epiphany--which, by the way, continued even after I returned from the beach to the chaos of my teenager-filled domestic life back at home--led to fresh studies of Jesus' words and the construction of this new book.  That's the great thing about being a writer, you get to explore the things you are most curious about.  What the heck does it really mean to come to Jesus . . . to sit with Him . . . to stay with Him?   These are actually radical, countercultural concepts, as we live in a world that spins on hurry, constant movement, multitasking, competing technologies that often mitigate against real relationships, and the occasional assumption that even our relationship with God Himself can be downloaded in some instant way as we drive, sip a latte, and surf the Internet.  Many of us have developed Spiritual Attention Deficit Disorder.  We know little of the stillness of sitting with God.  It terrifies us . . . if I sit, I won't get anything DONE!!!!   But there is radical treasure to be discovered here, and I believe the simple concepts of coming, sitting, and staying are the keys to finding a rich, new way of living and loving God.  And please don't worry that this book tortuously strains the dog metaphors to make spiritual points.  It doesn't. I really didn't want it to get cheesy.  So, blessings to all, feel free to order hundreds of copies of the book for all your friends--just kidding--and thanks for taking the time to read this!  --Ellen Vaughn.

From the Inside Flap
"Come to me, all you who are weary andburdened, and I will give you rest."--Matthew 11:28 Perhaps you're like me. Perhaps you originallycame to Jesus and felt great freedom as Heeased your load. But maybe, over the course ofthe journey with Him, your burdens piled upand you lost your joy. It happens so easily: weunconsciously lose our focus on Christ and beginto look to ourselves. We distractedly go throughthe routines of the "Christian life," whatever thatis, depending on our own strength, discipline, and works. When that happens, the world goes gray. The bright colors and fun vitality of an intimaterelationship with Jesus fade to an anxious, resentful, weary, and burdened religious life: thevery thing Jesus came to free people from. Yet, embedded within Jesus' call to "Cometo Me" is a progression of verbs that actuallylead to the result of rest. Wonderful, real restfor our souls. And if you have a strange brainlike me, these verbs happen to sound a lot likedog commands. I'm not suggesting that we'reall retrievers or poodles or border collies . . .but I am saying that there is a certain friskylove, power, and freedom in obedience that isunleashed when we respond to Jesus' invitationand learn to obey the commands of the Master. Come. Sit. Stay. When we obey these commands, the richresult is rest. This rest can change our lives. Author Ellen Vaughn

Come, Sit, READ!!!
By Joybelle
Ellen Vaughn brilliantly, graciously, and at times, hilariously writes on the relevant topic of rest for our weary souls. The reader will find him/herself pondering deeply, laughing loudly, and responding appreciatively to the gracious tone of the author as she intelligently explores Jesus' invitation found in Matthew 11:28-30. My recommendation is to Come, Sit, READ!!!

A refreshing reminder of God's work
By FaithfulReader.com
If a potential reader saw only the title and cover photo of this book, she might think that it should be categorized in the "dog training" section of a bookstore. (Actually, there is pet book available with this very same title.) But, no, the subtitle and tag line reveal a more humane topic: "finding rest for your soul" and "an invitation to a deeper life in Christ."

Writer Ellen Vaughn has been the "with" byline writer of a number of books by notables such as Steven Curtis Chapman, Denise Jackson and Charles Colson. She's also the author of fiction and nonfiction titles that include RADICAL GRATITUDE. Here in COME, SIT, STAY, she jumps off from Jesus' exhortation in Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest..." From there, it's obvious that, yes, her household includes a dog; her biblical insights are loosely wound around canine metaphors. To the three obedience commands in her title, her outline adds a fourth verb: rest, which she draws from Jesus' use as a resultant noun ("you will find rest for your souls.").

Vaughn takes considerable space introducing and describing the God with whom we are to come, sit, stay and rest; the book sometimes feels to be as much about God's redemptive plan as it is about us --- her presumably female readers. For example, several chapters in part one ("Come to Grace") dealing with overcoming shame are largely biblical teaching, through Old and New Testament passages.

When you pick up this book, don't expect a manual explaining how to find and rest in God. A Catholic writer might have laid out instruction in classic methods of prayer and scriptural meditation, but Vaughn stays away from any advised pattern: "Life in the Spirit is no formula. It is a relationship with a living Lord who will live in us and guide us if we yield our precious control to Him."

Vaughn and her family, including teens, are very connected to and active in mission work, especially in the Dominican Republic. Her international awareness and viewpoint, including anecdotes, are a refreshing reminder of our often myopic vision and of God's work in the world beyond our narrow boundaries.

The final chapters, about resting in trust and blessing, describe God's rest for his children and also include stories of Christians reaching out to provide respite to others, especially overburdened caretakers of children with handicaps. The rest God provides sometimes comes by way of fellow travelers. And the ultimate rest, she concludes, is found in the world to come.
