Gr 5–8—Victoria Secord, a 14-year-old dog musher, has been struggling in the year since her father died. Her relationship with her mother is falling apart and her best source of comfort is the dog team that once belonged to her father. While out on a run with the animals, she finds and rescues an injured city boy, but after getting lost in a blizzard they both need rescuing. With the survival skills she learned from her father, Victoria must lead them all to safety. Written by a musher, this book is full of detailed descriptions of dog sledding and far northern survival. At times the technical details are more fully fleshed out than the character development, but they are never so complex as to break the flow of the story. Fast-paced plotting and suspense-filled writing will push readers along as the characters journey from dangerous disasters to lucky breaks. The high-stakes adventure and episodic nature of the chapters will make this book an easy sell for reluctant readers. Even in an arctic setting that can feel as foreign as a distant planet, Johnson keeps a sense of realism in this enjoyable adventure tale.—Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK
From Booklist
In the year since 14-year-old Alaskan Victoria lost her father, she has felt isolated from her mother and her community. She pours herself into working with the dog-sled team she and her dad loved and runs in local sledding races, finding little else to engage her interest or energy. Setting out one morning with the team to a distant neighbor, she comes across a wrecked snowmobile and its unconscious driver, Chris, as a deadly snowstorm rolls in. Thus begins an adventure in the vein of Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet (1987) as Victoria and Chris struggle to survive in the harsh Alaska wilderness. Johnson has crafted a vivid setting and cast of characters, teens and dogs, coupled with pacing that locks the reader in from the opening descriptions of a sled race to Victoria and Chris’ semi-cooperative three-day attempt to make it home. Some gentle gender-role switching—athletic but citified Chris can sew but doesn’t know survival basics—adds even more texture to this dynamic adventure. Emotionally satisfying and insightful, this story has staying power. Grades 6-9. --Francisca Goldsmith

Excellent story of survival
By J.Prather
Ice Dogs is an excellent story of survival that kept me up late last night as I burned through these pages, eager to know how it ended. I am not in this book's target group, which I would estimate as young readers grades 5-8, however I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The author does a wonderful job with setting the scene. Her descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness were rich and beautiful and never bogged down a narrative that sped along at a blistering pace. I felt that I was there with Victoria as she struggled to survive and care for her team. I relished all the small details that really brought to life the mushing culture and loved the poignant descriptions of Victoria's relationship with her dogs. They were never overly sentimental, only showing a deep love and respect.
Victoria is a well-developed and fascinating character, and young readers will cheer for her stubborn independence, her craftsmanship and her big heart. Her relationship with Chris is deftly handled, providing just the barest hint of romance that will leave readers wondering how they would handle being forced to cuddle up with a complete stranger in order to survive. Their dialogues are filled with emotion, tension, and authenticity. Victoria's struggles with the death of her father were heart felt and added yet another dimension to a story that was ultimately about much more than physical survival.
The short chapters, suspense, and engaging characters make this a natural choice for reluctant readers, although anyone interested in a well written, exciting story will certainly find much to love here. The author brings an uncommon level of complexity and emotion to what may seem to be a standard tale of survival, raising it to the top of its genre and making it an enthusiastic recommend for young readers ages 10 and up.

It's no "Far North"
By Emily J. Morris
I was excited to find that the great Will Hobbs had recommended this book. With all due respect to his taste, I found myself hoping for something more Hobbs-like or perhaps even a bit of Gary Paulsen or Jean Craighead George. This winds up as a moderately entertaining survival tale with just as many hormones as thrills.
Victoria is a young dog racer struggling with her father's drowning and her relationship with her mother. After a fight with her mom, she runs out with her dogs intending on a short stay. But she runs into cute boy Chris and the two manage to get themselves horribly lost in the Alaskan wilderness.
The writing is nice and friendly and Victoria is a pleasant narrator. All the usual and right elements of wilderness danger and survival are in place, but the result is a rather paint-by-numbers feeling to the whole book. It's exciting enough, but nothing we haven't seen before. Victoria and Chris fight then bond, the dogs get endangered, everyone nearly dies, and Victoria is forced to face her ghosts. Good stuff that works, yet in this case with nothing particularly fresh added it all feels somewhat contrived.
Victoria and Chris are fun characters and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. I liked the mushing information as well as the fascinating and terrifying Alaskan setting. The story is well-plotted and the action rarely slows. Teen girls especially will enjoy it for the strong female lead as well as the romance and boys will appreciate the survival element.
But when compared with the greats such as "Dogsong" and "Far North", this is just all right.

I wanted to read something "real" for a change from my usual sci-fi. Ice dogs was perfect. I love that author Terry Johnson was a musher herself so I too could understand everything about dog sledding. This isn't a spoiler alert but if you're a dog lover, and I am, then read this without fear. It took a while to get to the story behind Victorias' animosity towards her mother but it played out perfectly. This was an action/adventure perfect for teens. The action starts almost immediately and though my main love is sic-fi, I couldn't put this book down long enough to get anything done. Can't say that about many books. I give this 5 stars as a teen novel.
